About Arabic Language & International Studies Program
If you're looking to deepen your Arabic language skills while engaging seriously with international relations, Middle Eastern politics, and North African culture, the WorldStrides Global Campus in Meknes offers one of the most immersive and academically rigorous semester programs available. Based in Meknes — a walkable, welcoming imperial city known for its stunning medina and rich history — you'll take courses taught in English on topics like the Arab Spring, colonialism and post-colonialism in North Africa, gender studies, religious studies, and more, while simultaneously advancing your Arabic through placement-based language courses ranging from beginner to advanced Modern Standard Arabic.
Your semester begins with a multi-day orientation that takes you through Casablanca, Marrakesh, and the Atlas Mountains before you settle into life in Meknes. From there, you'll enroll in four to five courses per semester, with the option to add Darija (Moroccan Arabic) as a sixth course. All Arabic language placements are determined by an on-site placement exam, ensuring you're appropriately challenged. Coursework spans disciplines including history, anthropology, political science, and linguistics, with select courses offering an optional honors component for students seeking deeper faculty mentorship and independent research.
Beyond the classroom, your program fee includes guided excursions to iconic Moroccan destinations such as Fes, Rabat, Tangier, and the Sahara Desert, as well as cultural experiences like Moroccan cooking classes and visits to historic medinas. You'll live and study in the modern Hamria district, with easy access to the labyrinthine medieval medina. Housing options include apartments, homestays, or independent housing, giving you flexibility in how you immerse yourself in local life. On-site staff will greet you at the airport, support you throughout your stay, and provide 24/7 emergency assistance and mental health support.
For students who want to go further, the Study + Community Engagement option allows you to earn an additional credit by serving alongside a local Moroccan organization. Partner organizations specialize in areas including ESL and childhood education, healthcare, human rights, and community development. This reflective, credit-bearing experience deepens your intercultural competencies and connects your academic work to real-world social issues. The program is also available as a full academic year for students who want the deepest possible immersion.
Upon completing the program, you'll receive an official transcript from the WorldStrides Higher Ed school of record (University of Rhode Island beginning Fall 2026), which will be sent to your home institution two to three months after the program ends. The program is open to students who are at least 18 years old with a minimum 2.5 GPA, and is ideal for those interested in Arabic language acquisition, Middle Eastern and North African studies, international relations, or anyone eager to experience life in one of the Arab world's most historically significant and culturally vibrant cities.
