About Ecuador: The Galápagos Islands & The Cloud Forest Program
Join this immersive summer program and explore one of the world's most biodiverse countries. You'll travel through Ecuador's four distinct geographical zones—from Quito's colonial highlands to the misty Cloud Forest, the soaring Andes, and ultimately to the legendary Galápagos Islands, 600 miles off the coast. This 21-day adventure combines outdoor exploration, community service, wildlife observation, and cultural immersion in a cohort-based learning model designed to build real-world skills.
Your journey begins in Quito, Ecuador's vibrant capital, where you'll orient yourself to the country's history and culture while practicing Spanish. From there, you'll head to the Mindo Nambillo Cloud Forest, part of the unique Chocó Andino region home to over 600 bird species. Here you'll get hands-on with conservation work—planting native species, preparing soil and compost, and participating in forest maintenance. You'll also learn traditional chocolate-making techniques and visit a butterfly farm to observe the fascinating life cycles of tropical species.
Next comes a week-long homestay in Riobamba or another Andean community, where you'll live with an Ecuadorian family and practice Spanish daily through shared activities like cooking traditional dishes (ceviche, empanadas), dancing lessons, and market visits. You'll contribute meaningfully to community service projects supporting environmental initiatives or local needs. A highlight includes visiting Chimborazo, the world's highest mountain outside Asia and the closest point to the sun, where you may hike with experienced local guides who specialize in mountain expeditions.
The program's centerpiece is your time in the Galápagos Islands, where you'll walk in the footsteps of Charles Darwin. You'll visit the Charles Darwin Research Station, a biological research facility and breeding center, to learn about the conservation efforts protecting these irreplaceable ecosystems. Activities include snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, swimming in lava grottoes, visiting turtle-hatching sites, exploring mangrove forests and flamingo lagoons, and observing the courtship displays of rare tropical birds. You'll encounter seals, marine iguanas, and species found nowhere else on Earth.
This is an active, physically engaging program suitable for participants comfortable with outdoor adventures. You'll develop Spanish language skills, earn a community service certificate, and cultivate interpersonal competencies like resourcefulness, intercultural communication, problem-solving, and adaptability. The program is led by experienced educators including Vanessa Wyns, an M.S. in Ethnobotany who has lived and worked across 40+ countries, and local experts like Edison Baldeón, a master mountain guide and national tourism expert based in the Ecuadorian highlands. Throughout, The Experiment's 90+ years of expertise in responsible travel ensures you'll have safe, meaningful interactions with local communities and ecosystems.
