About First Year Abroad Program
WorldStrides' First Year Abroad (FYA) programs offer incoming or deferred first-year students a transformative semester or year of study at premier international universities, combining rigorous academics with intentional cohort building and cultural immersion. You'll join a specialized cohort of first-year students while earning transferable credits in your field of study—whether that's business, engineering, humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences. These programs are designed to replicate the benefits of a traditional on-campus first year, but with the added advantage of international perspective and global competency development.
You can choose from five flagship locations: London at Roehampton University with its iconic campus in southwest London near Richmond Park; Málaga, Spain at Universidad de Málaga, located just minutes from the beach with access to world-class museums; Rome, Italy at the American University of Rome with rooftop views of ancient monuments; Athens, Greece at the American College of Greece with an expansive 64-acre campus; or Seoul, South Korea at Konkuk University near the Han River in one of Asia's most vibrant cities. All programs offer first-year courses taught in English across multiple disciplines, allowing you to progress with your chosen degree plan while exploring new academic interests.
Beyond the classroom, you'll experience intentional program design that prioritizes your adjustment and growth. This includes a comprehensive Bridging Cultures Orientation upon arrival, weekly cultural activities ranging from city tours to weekend excursions, and a structured Peer Mentor Program pairing you with local students who help you navigate university life and your host country. You'll have access to academic support from both your host institution and WorldStrides' on-site staff, professional development resources, and mental health support—ensuring you're supported both academically and personally throughout your abroad experience.
What makes FYA programs particularly valuable is their holistic support structure. You receive 24/7 emergency assistance, airport reception, housing with internet included, international health insurance, cultural excursions, and career development resources—all designed to help you return to your home campus as a confident, globally-minded student with clear academic goals and strong peer connections. Whether you're seeking to boost your resume with international experience, fulfill general education requirements while exploring the world, or begin specialized coursework in a new cultural context, First Year Abroad programs position you for academic success and personal growth during your crucial first year of college.
