About Full-Time Community Engagement Opportunities Program
WorldStrides' Community Engagement programs offer you a meaningful opportunity to serve alongside local professionals while immersing yourself in vibrant communities across the globe. Formally known as service-learning, these programs combine hands-on work with guided reflection to help you develop critical thinking about community development and civic engagement in both local and global contexts. You'll participate in ongoing projects identified by host organizations across six community sectors—Community Development, Education & ESL, Environment, Family & Youth Development, Health, and Human Rights—allowing you to choose placements that align with your interests and values.
You can serve in diverse locations including Cape Town (South Africa), Meknes (Morocco), Lima and Cusco (Peru), San José (Costa Rica), Valparaíso and Viña del Mar (Chile), Salamanca and Granada (Spain), and Galway (Ireland). Whether you're shadowing healthcare professionals in Peruvian clinics, organizing youth camps with autism support organizations in Ireland, assisting women's vocational training in Morocco, or working on environmental projects in Costa Rica, you'll gain direct exposure to real social issues and the local resources addressing them. Program placements range from 4 to 8 weeks, with costs starting as low as $3,600, and all include housing, internet, in-country orientation, 24/7 emergency assistance, mental health support, and career resources.
The academic component is central to your experience. You'll be enrolled in a community-engaged learning course designed to help you reflect on your work, understand the social context of your host community, and document the professional and cultural competencies you develop. You can earn transferable academic credit through WorldStrides' school of record (University of South Florida through Summer 2026, University of Rhode Island beginning Fall 2026), with 2–4 credits available depending on program length. Alternatively, many students have successfully petitioned their home universities for Independent Study or Special Topics credit.
To participate, you must be at least 18 years old and have graduated high school by your program start date. When applicable, minimum language requirements apply—for Spanish-speaking locations, you'll complete an oral language assessment. During the application process, you'll select your top three organization or sector preferences, and WorldStrides' placement coordinators will work with you to find the best fit based on your language level, availability, and goals. You'll receive detailed pre-departure support, including a virtual orientation where you'll meet fellow participants and your Resident Director, access to an online course with pre-departure assignments, and comprehensive arrival logistics.
This is an ideal program if you want to develop intercultural communication, leadership, problem-solving, and empathy skills while making a tangible difference. You'll leave with not only meaningful professional experience and potential academic credit, but also deeper connections to a global community and clarity about your values and place in the world.
