About Italy High School Cultural Exchange Program Program
Experience authentic Italian life through Campus Education's high school cultural exchange program in Italy. You'll attend Italian high school alongside local students, living with a host family and becoming fully immersed in both the language and culture. Classes run from 8 am to 1–2 pm, six days a week (Monday through Saturday), from mid-September to mid-June, leaving your afternoons and evenings free to explore, study, and engage with your host family and community.
You can choose your ideal program length: a unique 6-week White Christmas program in December (perfect for improving speaking skills while celebrating with your host family), a full 3-month intensive, a 5-month semester, or a complete 10-month academic year. By the end, you'll return fluent in both the Italian language and Italian culture. You'll stand in front of the monuments you've studied, explore the birthplace of the Renaissance, and spend your free time discovering world-famous art, architecture, and cuisine—from museums and cathedrals to local festivals and authentic Italian meals.
Your host family experience is central to the program. Italian families are warm, protective, and social; they expect you to participate fully in family life by helping with household tasks, attending meals, and engaging in weekend excursions. Communication is key—your host family will likely ask you to speak English occasionally to help them improve their language skills, while you focus on speaking Italian. Over time, you'll transition from being a guest to becoming a true family member.
As a cultural exchange student, you're expected to show genuine interest in all subjects, complete your assignments diligently, and make a consistent effort to speak Italian. You'll respect your teachers, school rules, and classmates, and in return, you'll receive a certificate of attendance upon departure. Italian schools have no uniforms and less formal teacher-student relationships than many countries, but they also lack organized afternoon sports—your social life centers on evenings and weekends.
This program is ideal for high school students aged 15–18 who want to deepen their Italian language skills, understand European culture firsthand, and gain the confidence that comes from living independently in a new country. Whether you choose a short winter break or a full year abroad, you'll develop language fluency, cultural competence, and lifelong connections with your host family and Italian peers.
