About J-Term at Florence University of the Arts Program
If you're looking to make the most of your winter break without falling behind academically, this two-week J-Term program at Florence University of the Arts (FUA) in Florence, Italy offers a compelling blend of intensive coursework and authentic cultural immersion. Hosted by one of Italy's most innovative institutions—located along the Arno River in historic Renaissance palaces—you'll earn three U.S. semester credits in a single intensive course taught entirely in English. No prior Italian language experience is required, making this program accessible to students across disciplines.
You'll choose from a diverse menu of courses spanning the arts, business, culinary arts, fashion, hospitality, and Italian language. Options include Art and Architecture in Florence and Tuscany, Fashion Retail Management, Advanced Italian Restaurant Cooking, Front of the House Management, Cultural Introduction to Italy, Food Culture and Society in Italy, and Health and Fitness in the Mediterranean, among others. Many courses incorporate FUA's signature Community Engagement Member Institutions (CEMI) model, placing you in real-world environments—local pastry shops, wellness spas, publishing houses, and more—where you learn by doing alongside local professionals and community members.
Florence itself is your classroom and your playground. Renaissance architecture, world-famous museums, cozy neighborhood cafés, and a vibrant street culture surround you from the moment you wake up. Cultural activities are woven into the program, including guided tours of the Bardini Garden, gelato-making demonstrations, leather district walks, and an in-depth orientation to help you navigate city life, academic expectations, and your new community. The WorldStrides Connections app keeps you connected to your itinerary, your support team, and health and safety resources throughout your stay.
Housing is arranged through the program and includes off-campus apartments, student residences with amenities like a rooftop gym and pool and bicycle sharing, or independent housing if you prefer to arrange your own accommodations. All utilities and internet are included. You'll be supported by a dedicated on-site team—including a Resident Director, Student Activities coordinators, an Academics advisor, and a Student Housing liaison—available by email, phone, or app. Your program fee covers tuition, housing, internet, cultural activities, international insurance, 24/7 emergency assistance, mental health support, and career resources.
This program is ideal for undergraduate students aged 18 and older with a minimum 2.75 GPA who want to advance their academic progress, explore a potential semester abroad, or simply experience Florence in a structured, supported way. Transcripts are issued by FUA and reflect recommended U.S. semester credits; an optional U.S. School of Record transcript from the University of South Florida is available for an additional fee. Financial aid and scholarships may be applicable, and WorldStrides provides budgeting resources to help you plan for out-of-pocket expenses like flights, meals, and personal spending.
