About J-Term at Freie Universität Berlin Program
Spend your January term immersed in the energy and complexity of Berlin—a city where cutting-edge creativity meets centuries of layered history. At Freie Universität Berlin (FUB), one of Europe's top-ranked research universities, you'll enroll in academically rigorous courses covering subjects like German language, European studies, history, political science, art history, sociology, sustainable business, urban economics, and law. Classes are taught in English or German by local and visiting faculty, and you'll study alongside a cohort of international students on FUB's leafy, residential campus in the Lankwitz district. No previous German language experience is required to participate—language courses are available from true beginner through advanced C1 level, with placement determined by an exam administered by the university.
The program runs from early to late January, making it an ideal option for earning three recommended U.S. semester credits (6 ECTS) without disrupting your regular academic calendar. Course offerings include deep dives into EU integration and reform, the rise of Nazi Germany, comparative law and society, sustainable business innovation, and urban economics with a special focus on Berlin itself. Subject courses are considered upper-division undergraduate level, while language courses range from lower to upper division depending on your placement. Your transcript from FUB will reflect ECTS credits and contact hours, and WorldStrides provides guidance to help you work with your home institution on credit transfer.
Beyond the classroom, the program is packed with cultural activities designed to connect you to Berlin's remarkable past and present. You'll join a guided street art tour uncovering the politics and stories behind Berlin's murals, visit the former Stasi prison to understand East Germany's surveillance state, explore the Reichstag dome and Berliner Dom, and take a walking tour of iconic landmarks like the Berlin Wall and Brandenburg Gate. Excursions to museums and historic sites—including visits relevant to specific courses like the Nazi history class—are woven into the academic experience, making learning tangible and unforgettable.
WorldStrides provides comprehensive support throughout your program. Upon arrival, you'll attend an in-depth orientation to help you navigate city life, academic culture, and your new home. A dedicated on-site team, including a Resident Director, is available throughout your stay for everything from local recommendations to emergency assistance. The program fee includes tuition, an official transcript, housing, internet, cultural activities, in-country orientation, local team support, international insurance, 24/7 emergency assistance, mental health support, and career resources. You'll be responsible for flights, meals, books, personal expenses, and your international phone plan.
Housing options include off-campus apartments, a student village, homestay with a local family (including two meals per day and weekly laundry), or independent housing if you prefer to arrange your own accommodations at a discounted program rate. Assignments are made on a first-come, first-served basis after you complete a housing questionnaire post-acceptance. This program is ideal for undergraduates who want a short-term, credit-bearing international experience that combines academic rigor with deep cultural immersion in one of the world's most historically significant cities.
