About J-Term at Universidad Veritas Program
Spend your winter break in San José, Costa Rica, exploring global perspectives on sustainability, ecology, and health through intensive, project-based coursework at Universidad Veritas. This two-week J-Term program is designed for students seeking a meaningful short-term study abroad experience that combines rigorous academics with cultural immersion. You'll enroll in one intensive course taught in English (with Spanish-taught options available for advanced speakers), meeting Monday through Friday with field study components that take learning beyond the classroom into Costa Rica's diverse tropical ecosystems and communities.
Located in the vibrant Zapote district of San José, Universidad Veritas is a forward-thinking institution known for its commitment to sustainability, design, and social impact. The university provides access to modern academic facilities, creative studios, photography labs, and design-focused spaces that foster innovative learning. As a student in this program, you'll benefit from the Center for International Programs and Sustainability Studies, which integrates global issues into the classroom and encourages real-world application of knowledge. The campus culture emphasizes climate action and sustainability, reflected in both academics and daily life.
You'll have access to a diverse range of courses spanning health sciences, environmental studies, and cultural exploration. Popular offerings include "Costa Rican Health Care System and Tropical Medicine," where you'll examine the country's public health system and tropical diseases; "Tropical Ecosystems Gallery," offering field visits to Caribbean slopes, highland tropical areas, rainforests, and volcanic regions; "Introduction to Genetics: Current Applications," combining laboratory skills with practical research; and "Wholistic Midwifery Skills: A Latin American Perspective," exploring maternal health and traditional birthing practices. Each course includes hands-on learning, group work, and opportunities to develop communication and leadership skills.
Beyond the classroom, your experience includes cultural activities designed to connect you with local communities. You'll participate in guided city tours of San José's iconic National Theater, prepare traditional Costa Rican dishes during cooking classes, and engage in immersive excursions throughout the program. Housing options include homestays with host families (offering two meals daily, laundry service, and immersion in local life) or independent housing arrangements. An in-depth orientation upon arrival helps you navigate the city, university, and your new home, while on-site staff provide ongoing support for academic needs, local recommendations, and emergency assistance.
The program earns 2–3 recommended U.S. semester credits (40–45 contact hours), transferable to your home institution. Whether you're interested in health, environmental science, language practice, or cultural understanding, this program offers the perfect way to escape winter, advance your academic goals, and gain firsthand experience of Costa Rica's commitment to sustainability and wellness.
