About My Experience Renting Hanbok as a Plus Size Woman in Korea Program
This is a student testimonial from a WorldStrides study abroad participant describing a cultural excursion experience in Seoul, South Korea. The author, Kaylee R. from Wright State University, shares her personal journey of renting a traditional hanbok (Korean dress) at a size-inclusive rental studio called "Yes Hanbok" during a WorldStrides-organized trip to Seoul. The experience took place in 2019 with a return visit during a more recent WorldStrides excursion. As a plus-size woman (US size 20), the author previously had a discouraging experience trying to find hanbok rental options in Seoul that carried her size. However, during her WorldStrides trip, she was connected with "Yes Hanbok," a studio that specializes in size-inclusive hanbok rentals. The staff provided exceptional support, helping her select from various colors and styles, and assisting with the full dressing process including accessories and hair styling. The excursion culminated in an exploration of Gyeongbokgung Palace while wearing the traditional dress. Beyond the cultural activity itself, the author emphasizes the meaningful friendships she developed through the study abroad experience, noting that the support and encouragement from her group helped her overcome initial anxiety and embarrassment. She describes the experience as one of her favorite days in Korea and highly recommends "Yes Hanbok" to other plus-size women visiting Seoul, particularly those sizes up to US 22. This testimonial reflects how study abroad programs can provide not just cultural immersion opportunities but also foster personal growth, inclusive community building, and confidence. The experience highlights the importance of finding welcoming, size-inclusive vendors and the transformative power of peer support in overcoming self-doubt while abroad.
