About Netherlands High School Cultural Exchange Program Program
Experience high school life in the Netherlands, a country renowned for its progressive education system, open-minded culture, and picturesque landscapes. Campus Education offers you the opportunity to study in one of Europe's most English-friendly destinations, where you can choose from flexible program lengths: a short 3-month stay, a 5-month semester, or a full 10-month academic year. As a student in the Netherlands, you'll attend high school classes held Monday to Friday between 08:30 and 15:00, with a lunch break from 12:00 to 13:00, and most schools closed Wednesday afternoons. The Dutch education system is distinguished by its interactive, collaborative teaching approach—you won't just learn facts, but develop critical thinking skills, learn to form your own opinions through thorough research, solve problems practically, work effectively in teams, and think creatively. Dutch high schools are divided into three academic streams (VMBO for vocational training, HAVO for applied sciences universities, and VWO for university preparation), allowing you to select the path that best fits your goals. English is widely spoken throughout the Netherlands, and while Dutch is not compulsory, Campus Education offers language courses both before and during your stay to help you integrate more deeply into local life. You'll live with a carefully selected host family who embodies Dutch values of openness and friendliness. Dutch families actively involve exchange students in their daily lives—sharing meals where family members discuss their day, involving students in household chores, and participating together in weekend activities like sports, cultural events, and social clubs. This immersion in family life accelerates your language learning through daily conversation and creates the opportunity for lasting, meaningful friendships. The Netherlands itself is a compelling destination: below sea level in many areas with distinctive dikes, it features fertile farmlands, picturesque canals, charming seaside fishing villages, and vibrant modern cities. Dutch culture values work-life balance and purposeful time use—the saying 'Rust Roest' (rest rusts) reflects the Dutch belief in staying active and engaged. Whether you're seeking academic challenge, cultural immersion, language development, or personal growth, studying in the Netherlands offers a unique combination of world-class education, progressive values, and authentic family and community integration.
