About Semester at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú Program

If you're looking for an academically rigorous and culturally immersive semester abroad, the program at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) in Lima, Peru offers an unparalleled opportunity to study alongside local Peruvian and international students at the country's oldest and most prestigious private university. Founded in 1917, PUCP is consistently ranked as Peru's top university, and its vibrant, self-contained campus in Lima's San Miguel district gives you easy access to both academic excellence and the dynamism of one of South America's most exciting capital cities.

Academically, you'll choose from a wide range of courses spanning archaeology, communications, environmental science, geography, history, linguistics, literature, philosophy, social sciences, business, engineering, and more. Most courses are taught in Spanish alongside local students—ideal if you've completed at least five semesters of college-level Spanish—while a growing list of English-taught options is also available for students who have tested out of two semesters of college-level Spanish. Credits are recorded on an official PUCP transcript, and WorldStrides works with you to facilitate transfer back to your home institution. You can earn 12–16 recommended U.S. semester credits per term.

Beyond the classroom, Lima itself is your campus extension. You'll explore centuries of history at the Huaca Pucllana pre-Inca pyramid, wander catacombs and colonial plazas in the city's historic center, learn street art techniques rooted in Peruvian activism, and relax on the beaches of Playas del Sur alongside local Limeños. Optional excursions take you further afield—sandboarding in the desert oasis of Huacachina, spotting penguins and sea lions on the Ballestas Islands, and journeying to Machu Picchu to feed alpacas and tour sacred Incan ruins in Cusco's Sacred Valley. An Amazon boat trip to a manatee rescue center and a guided jungle survival walk are also on offer.

For students who want to deepen their impact, the Study + Community Engagement track pairs your coursework with structured volunteer service alongside Lima-based organizations specializing in family and youth development, healthcare, education, community development, and human rights. You'll complete reflective assignments through an online community-engaged learning course and have the opportunity to earn one additional U.S. semester credit through WorldStrides' school of record.

Support is built into every step of your experience. You'll be greeted at the airport upon arrival, welcomed with a comprehensive in-country orientation, and backed by a local English-speaking team and Resident Director throughout your stay. Housing options include homestays with host families (including two meals a day), student residences with other international students, fully-furnished apartments, or independent housing. International insurance and 24/7 emergency assistance are included in your program fee. You can also connect with Peruvian peers through the PUCP Buddy Program and Tándem PUCP language exchange initiative, making it easy to build genuine friendships and sharpen your Spanish in real-world settings. This program is open to students who are at least 18 years old with a minimum 2.5 GPA.
