About Semester at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid Program
Spend a semester—or even a full academic year—immersed in Madrid's rich academic and cultural life while taking courses at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), often called the 'Harvard of Spain.' This WorldStrides program (formerly International Studies Abroad) places you at one of Spain's most prestigious public universities, where you'll study alongside local Spanish students and international peers in a bilingual, globally oriented environment. Choose from two tracks—Business & Social Sciences or Engineering—and select from a wide range of English-taught courses spanning business administration, economics, finance, international studies, journalism, communications, cultural studies, aerospace engineering, computer science, data science, biomedical engineering, robotics, and more. You'll enroll in 4–6 courses per semester, earning 24–30 ECTS credits (equivalent to 12–15 recommended U.S. semester credits), and take classes at either the Getafe or Leganés campus, both located about 30 minutes from central Madrid via commuter rail.
Academically, UC3M stands out for its rigorous, internationally recognized programs. Its business departments hold AACSB accreditation, and its STEM offerings—including data science, telecommunications, and robotics—are among Spain's best. You can also enroll in Spanish language courses at any level through the Carlos III International School (C3IS), completing a placement exam prior to arrival. Keep in mind that UC3M courses demand significant independent study outside the classroom, often exceeding the workload typical at U.S. universities. First- and second-year courses are recommended; third-year courses require academic review, and fourth-year courses are not permitted.
Beyond the classroom, you'll experience Madrid through curated excursions and cultural activities included in your program fee. Past activities have included guided visits to Toledo's ancient cathedrals and synagogues, tours of world-class museums like the Prado and Reina Sofía, a hands-on Spanish cooking class, a trip to the Alhambra in Granada, pottery workshops, salsa dancing classes, rooftop visits at the Círculo de Bellas Artes, cycling through Casa de Campo, and street art walks through the Lavapiés neighborhood. Optional excursions to cities like Salamanca are also available for an additional fee.
Your program fee covers tuition, housing, internet, cultural activities, airport reception, in-country orientation, international insurance, 24/7 emergency assistance, mental health support, and career resources. You'll be responsible for flights, meals, books, personal spending, travel insurance, and your cell phone plan. Housing options include fully furnished apartments with other international students, homestays with local families (including two meals daily and laundry), student residence halls with private bedrooms, or independent housing at a discounted program rate. Housing is assigned on a first-come, first-served basis after you complete a questionnaire post-acceptance.
This program is open to students who are at least 18 years old and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. It is available for Fall Semester, Spring Semester, or a full Academic Year—giving you the flexibility to choose the experience that best fits your schedule and goals. A dedicated on-site team, including a Resident Director and student services staff, will support you throughout your time in Madrid, ensuring your experience is safe, academically rewarding, and culturally transformative.
