About Semester at Universidad de Granada Program
Spend a semester — or a full academic year — at the Universidad de Granada (UGR), one of Spain's oldest and most storied institutions, founded in 1531. Set at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Granada is a vibrant Andalusian city where Moorish history, flamenco culture, and contemporary Spanish life converge beneath the breathtaking silhouette of the Alhambra. You'll study at UGR's Centro de Lenguas Modernas (CLM), located in the heart of the historic Realejo neighborhood, surrounded by Renaissance palaces, Gothic churches, and cobbled streets — the perfect backdrop for deep cultural and academic immersion.
This program is open to students at all levels of Spanish proficiency. You'll enroll in two Spanish language courses placed by a language assessment exam, alongside two to three elective courses taught in English or Spanish covering fields such as business, humanities, cultural studies, international relations, and more. If you want to accelerate your fluency, the Early Start option lets you complete a 60- or 80-hour intensive Spanish language course before the regular semester begins, earning additional recommended credits. Students with high-intermediate Spanish or above can also participate in for-credit internship opportunities — at no extra cost — in fields like education and community service.
Your program fee covers tuition, housing, an official transcript, cultural activities and excursions, airport reception, in-country orientation, international insurance, 24/7 emergency assistance, mental health support, and career resources. From the moment you land, WorldStrides' experienced local team — including a Resident Director, student services coordinator, and academics advisor — is on hand to guide you. You'll explore the Alhambra on a guided tour, attend flamenco shows, take hands-on cooking classes, practice conversational Spanish through structured language exchanges with local students, and take optional excursions to Morocco, Seville, Córdoba, Madrid, and the Sierra Nevada mountains.
For students who want to go deeper, the Study + Community Engagement track pairs your coursework with a placement at a local Granada organization focused on family and youth development, primary education, environmental education, healthcare, or community services. You'll earn one additional credit through an online reflective learning course and build real-world intercultural and professional competencies alongside your host community. If one semester simply isn't enough, the full Academic Year option is available for an even more transformative experience.
Housing options include off-campus apartments, homestays with local families (including meals and laundry), student residences, or independent housing if you prefer to arrange your own accommodations. Transcripts are issued by the Universidad de Granada reflecting contact hours, and credit transfer is arranged with your home institution. With application deadlines for Fall 2026 starting June 1 and Spring 2027 deadlines on October 1, now is the time to take the leap into one of Europe's most culturally rich study abroad destinations.
