About Semester at Universidad de Salamanca Program
Immerse yourself in academic life at the Universidad de Salamanca, Spain's oldest university founded in 1218 and one of the most prestigious institutions in the Hispanic world. Salamanca is globally celebrated as one of the finest places to study Spanish, thanks to its clear Castilian dialect, centuries-old academic tradition, and vibrant international student community. Whether you choose the Spanish Language Track or the English Track with Spanish Language, you'll engage with rigorous coursework while living in a city whose golden sandstone architecture and medieval streets provide a backdrop unlike anywhere else in the world.
In this immersive semester program, you'll enroll in a required Spanish language course offered at all levels and choose from a wide variety of electives taught in English or Spanish. Academic options span business, international studies, cultural studies, linguistics, literature, translation, history, and many more disciplines. Some courses are taught exclusively for international students, while others place you alongside local Spanish university students for a truly integrated academic experience. The Spanish Language Track requires a superior level of Spanish (typically six or more semesters of college-level study), while the English Track is accessible to students at all Spanish levels.
Beyond the classroom, WorldStrides enriches your experience with curated cultural excursions and activities included in your program fee — from exploring Salamanca's iconic Old and New Cathedrals to guided tours of Toledo, Segovia, and Madrid. You'll enjoy hands-on cooking classes featuring traditional Spanish dishes, a flamenco dance experience, and optional weekend escapes to Lisbon and Morocco. A thorough in-country orientation upon arrival helps you navigate the city, academic culture, and your new home. You'll also have access to intercambios (language exchange meetups) and other community-centered activities that blend classroom learning with everyday Spanish life.
If you want to deepen your impact, you can pair your studies with a community engagement option to earn credit while volunteering alongside local organizations focused on family and youth development, primary education, community services, or environmental education in Salamanca. For those who want even more immersion, the program is also offered for a full academic year. Housing options include student residences with meals included, homestays with a local family, or independent housing — all with internet access provided.
Your program fee covers tuition, an official transcript from Universidad de Salamanca, housing and internet, cultural activities and excursions, airport reception, in-country orientation, international insurance, 24/7 emergency assistance, mental health support, and career resources. You are responsible for flights, personal meals, books, personal spending, travel insurance, and your international cell phone plan. A dedicated on-site team — including a Resident Director, Student Services staff, and an Academic Director — is available throughout your stay to ensure your experience is safe, supported, and unforgettable. This program is open to students who are at least 18 years old with a minimum 2.5 GPA.
