About Semester at University of the South Pacific Program
Spend a transformative semester studying at the University of the South Pacific (USP), the premier higher education institution in the Pacific region. Located in Suva, Fiji's vibrant capital, this program immerses you in a uniquely multicultural academic environment surrounded by turquoise waters and vibrant coral reefs. You'll join a diverse international student body and enroll in 4 courses across business, arts, sciences, and specialized Pacific-focused disciplines—all taught by local faculty who bring the region's unique perspectives and priorities into the classroom. From marine science and conservation biology to cloud computing and data analytics, you'll choose from 40+ courses designed to deepen your understanding of global issues through a distinctly regional lens.
Beyond academics, you'll experience life on a tropical island while building meaningful connections with your new community. The USP Student Association organizes immersive cultural experiences including traditional ceremonies, visits to local markets, cultural nights, and field trips to natural wonders like Colo-i-Suva Forest Park and rainforest sanctuaries. Weekend excursions might take you to Navua Village for authentic cultural immersion, mud pools and sand dunes in Sigatoka, or even optional adventures to New Zealand's South Island. Whether you're attending a rugby match (Fiji's beloved sport), learning to cook authentic Fijian dishes, or exploring the island's stunning natural beauty, you'll develop a deep appreciation for Pacific Island culture and ecology.
You'll live in fully furnished apartments with other international students, complete with kitchens, common areas, ensuite bathrooms, and included utilities and internet. Weekly cleaning service and on-site laundry facilities support your comfort while you focus on your studies and experiences. An in-depth orientation upon arrival helps you navigate the city, university, and your new home, while a dedicated local team provides 24/7 support—from restaurant recommendations and academic guidance to emergency assistance and mental health resources. You're never alone; the WorldStrides Connections app keeps you connected to your support team and all program activities.
Academically, you'll earn 12–16 U.S. semester credits (or 18–24 quarter units) as you engage with courses spanning 100–300 levels. Your transcript will include recommendations for transfer credits, though your home institution makes the final determination. USP's strong emphasis on sustainability, innovation, and Pacific-led development means many courses directly address regional challenges like climate change and sustainable development. You might contribute to impactful research, join clubs and sports teams, or access peer-assisted study sessions and learning workshops. This semester abroad combines rigorous academics, cultural immersion, outdoor adventure, and personal growth in one of the world's most beautiful and culturally rich destinations.
The program welcomes students who are at least 18 years old with a minimum 2.5 GPA and sophomore standing. Whether you're passionate about environmental science, business innovation, cultural studies, or simply want to experience a radically different academic and cultural setting, this semester offers an unforgettable transformation. Your program fee covers tuition, housing, internet, cultural activities, excursions, airport reception, orientation, international insurance, 24/7 emergency assistance, and mental health support—so you can focus entirely on your experience while we handle the logistics.
