About 17 Day Upper Missinaibi & Thunderhouse Falls Program

Experience an unforgettable 17-day wilderness paddling expedition on the legendary Missinaibi River, one of Canada's most powerful and historically significant waterways. You'll start at Missinaibi Lake and paddle over 280 kilometers downstream through a Provincial Park, navigating more than 30 sets of rapids while descending 300 feet in elevation. This is an intermediate-level adventure designed to progressively build your paddling skills, starting with gentle class 1 whitewater and advancing to more challenging class 2 and 3 rapids as you gain confidence and technique.

The crown jewel of this journey is Thunderhouse Falls, famously called "the 8th wonder of the world." You'll spend time camped at a spectacular location perched 150 feet above the canyon, where you can swim, fish, and marvel at the raw power and beauty of this natural wonder. Below the falls, the river plunges another 300 feet in a single day as the Missinaibi cascades off the Canadian Shield onto the Hudson's Bay Lowlands, showcasing some of the most dramatic landscape transitions in the region.

Your adventure concludes at Bull Moose Bay, where you'll camp beneath towering clay banks as you reflect on two weeks of immersion in pristine northern wilderness. The program is fully supported with professional guides, all necessary paddling equipment (canoes, paddles, PFDs, helmets), camping gear, and complete meals throughout your journey. Transportation is arranged from Timmins, Ontario, including airport pickup and drop-off, as well as float plane access to the remote starting and ending points.

This expedition respects the traditional territories of the Cree, Moose Cree, and Anishinabek Nations, recognized under the James Bay Treaty No. 9. You'll experience the Missinaibi's unique combination of Precambrian granite geology, bogs, marshes, and wildlife in one of Canada's most remote and beautiful regions. Whether you're seeking a transformative wilderness experience, a test of your paddling abilities, or simply a chance to disconnect and reconnect with nature at its most magnificent, this 17-day journey delivers an authentic northern Canadian adventure you'll remember for a lifetime.
