About Wilderness First Aid (WFA) Program
The Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course offered by MHO Adventures is a two-day, hands-on training program designed for outdoor enthusiasts who venture into wilderness settings on overnight or short-term adventures. Whether you're a hiker, canoeist, camp counselor, or backcountry guide, this course equips you with the foundational skills needed to respond confidently when medical emergencies arise far from conventional care.
Throughout the course, you will learn to recognize a wide range of medical emergencies and develop proficiency in patient assessment, basic life-saving techniques, and field care for common wilderness injuries. The curriculum also includes CPR C Certification, making this a comprehensive entry-level wilderness medicine credential. MHO Adventures runs this program as a Licensed Training Provider with Wilderness Medical Associates International (WMAI), the globally recognized leader in wilderness medical education — meaning your certification carries international recognition wherever your adventures take you.
The course takes place at MHO's base camp in Huntsville, Ontario, nestled on 20 acres of forested land just 15 minutes south of town, with Mary Lake a short walk away. Between sessions, you can take a swim, catch the sunrise or sunset from the beach, explore nearby trails for running or biking, or unwind around the communal fire pit in the evening. The setting reinforces the wilderness context of your training and makes for a memorable learning environment.
A variety of onsite accommodation options are available to suit different preferences and budgets. Tent camping is offered for $40 for the duration of the course (bring your own gear), while shared bunkies are available at $50 per night and private bunkies at $125 per night — reduced from the standard $195/night rate as a courtesy to course participants. Each bunkie features two single bunks, a double loft, a couch, battery lanterns, and charging banks. Alternatively, motel-style rooms are available at the nearby Muskoka Bible Centre, just a 10-minute walk away, with a 15% discount available outside July and August.
For meals, a hot lunch option is available for $50 (note that a full meal plan is not offered on the two-day course). Home-cooked meals are prepared onsite and served family-style, adding a warm, communal feel to the experience. The upcoming session runs May 2–3, 2026, priced at $455 CAD + HST. This course is ideal for anyone who spends time in remote or natural environments and wants the confidence and skills to handle emergencies when professional medical help isn't immediately available.
