About Austria High School Cultural Exchange Program Program
Experience Austria as a high school student through Campus Education's cultural exchange programs, designed for students aged 15-18 who want to immerse themselves in Central European history, culture, and language. You'll choose from flexible program lengths—a 6-week White Christmas program, 3-month or 5-month semester options, or a full 10-month academic year abroad—all set in one of Europe's most architecturally and historically rich countries.
During your time in Austria, you'll attend a traditional Austrian Gymnasium (high school), where classes run five days a week starting just before 8 AM and typically finish around an hour after lunch (some schools include Saturday classes). Most schools are public and don't require uniforms, giving you an authentic local student experience. You'll study alongside Austrian peers, participate in school-organized sports and music activities, and have the opportunity to take additional German language classes to strengthen your fluency. A minimum level of German knowledge is required to receive grades in your subjects, though the program can arrange pre-arrival German instruction to prepare you for full immersion.
You'll live with a carefully selected Austrian host family in picturesque towns and small communities near larger cities. Host families embody "Gemütlichkeit"—Austrian warmth and friendliness—ensuring you feel genuinely welcomed. Many families live within easy reach of other European countries, making weekend trips to neighboring nations a common occurrence. You'll share evening meals with your family, experience authentic Austrian cuisine (think schnitzel and open-air markets), and potentially join family sightseeing adventures. Host parents typically work, so you'll develop independence by preparing your own lunch or warming up meals when needed.
Austria's appeal for students goes beyond academics: Vienna's world-class opera and classical music scene, Salzburg's stunning castles, rolling countryside landscapes, and centuries of Habsburg history create an enriching cultural backdrop. Whether you're interested in architecture, European history, or language learning, Austria offers an ideal setting. The program includes support services such as insurance, scholarship opportunities, and guidance through the registration and payment processes, making the logistics of studying abroad manageable.
This experience is perfect if you're seeking genuine cultural immersion, language development, and the chance to grow independently while living with a welcoming host family in one of Europe's most beautiful and historically significant countries.
