About Bloodvein River Program
Experience one of Canada's most remarkable wilderness canoe adventures on the Bloodvein River, a 12-day expedition designed for experienced paddlers seeking immersion in the heart of the Canadian Boreal Forest. Your journey begins with a floatplane charter from Bissett, Manitoba to Artery Lake, where you'll embark on 225 kilometers of exhilarating Class 1–3 whitewater rapids over 11 days of paddling.
The Bloodvein River flows through some of the most pristine and historically significant landscapes in North America. As Canada's only Heritage River located in two provinces, it traverses both Ontario and Manitoba, passing through Woodland Caribou Provincial Park and Atikaki Provincial Park. The river winds through picturesque gorges, serene lakes, and tranquil marshes before emptying into Lake Winnipeg, all set against the stunning backdrop of the ancient Precambrian Shield—some of the oldest rocks in the world.
Beyond the thrilling whitewater experience, you'll encounter deep cultural and historical layers. Ancient pictographs created by the Anishinaabe people line the riverbanks, testament to thousands of years of travel and stewardship on these waters. You'll portage around dramatic waterfalls, navigate through fast-flowing gorges carved by geological forces, and camp in settings ranging from peaceful forest environments to dramatic rock ledges with panoramic wilderness views. This program acknowledges that the Bloodvein River flows through the traditional territories of Metis and Anishinaabeg Nations, recognized under Treaty 5, positioning you as a respectful visitor to this sacred land.
Your daily experience balances active paddling with genuine wilderness leisure. Beyond navigating challenging rapids, you'll have ample time at camp to fish, relax, and enjoy gourmet meals prepared by the campfire—moments to truly reflect on the vastness and remoteness of the Boreal Forest surrounding you. All group equipment is provided, including canoes, paddles, PFDs, helmets, tents, thermarests, and waterproof gear barrels. Professional guides lead the expedition with comprehensive safety equipment including SAT phones, first aid kits, and rescue gear, ensuring you can push your paddling skills while remaining secure.
This program is ideal for advanced paddlers with solid whitewater experience who are ready to challenge themselves in a remote, pristine environment. The 12-day format (available in July 2026 and July 2027) accommodates serious adventurers who want to disconnect from civilization and reconnect with wilderness and history. All meals from lunch on Day 1 through lunch on Day 12 are included, as is the charter flight to Artery Lake and transportation of all guides, canoes, and gear. Optional add-ons include accommodation and dinner at a local Bed & Breakfast in Bissett on Day 0 and transportation to/from Winnipeg, making logistics flexible for participants traveling from various distances.
