About Germany: International Relations & The E.U. Program
This 20-day summer program takes you on an immersive journey through Germany, Belgium, and Luxembourg to explore international relations and the European Union's institutional structures. You'll begin in Frankfurt, a global commerce and culture hub, before spending 10 days in a German homestay where you'll live with a local family, attend school with German students, and develop authentic cross-cultural connections. This homestay experience forms the foundation of your learning, allowing you to practice German language skills in real-world settings and understand daily life in western Germany.
From your homestay community, you'll journey to Luxembourg—positioned at the historic 'border triangle' where the Schengen Agreement was signed—and then to Brussels, Belgium, the seat of the Nobel Peace Prize–winning European Union. In Brussels, you'll visit the European Commission and explore the E.U.'s institutional structure firsthand. These experiences move beyond classroom learning; you'll engage directly with EU institutions, community leaders, and local experts who shape international diplomacy and policy.
The program concludes in Berlin, Germany's capital and cultural center, where you'll tour significant historical sites including the Bundestag (Germany's parliament), participate in workshops on E.U. governance and policy, and learn about contemporary issues including migration, refugee crises, and internally displaced persons across Europe. You'll also visit an embassy to understand diplomacy in the European context and take a walking tour of Berlin through the eyes of a refugee, deepening your understanding of real human experiences within international relations frameworks.
Throughout the program, you'll develop both technical and interpersonal skills. On the technical side, you'll gain knowledge of German language and history, understand E.U. institutions and governance structures, learn international relations concepts, and build networks with diverse stakeholders. Interpersonally, you'll strengthen intercultural communication abilities, problem-solving confidence, adaptability, critical thinking, and empathy—all essential for careers in diplomacy, international organizations, policy, and global citizenship.
The Experiment's experiential learning model emphasizes cohort-based learning, meaning your peer group becomes a major source of learning and support throughout the journey. Trained group leaders with extensive experience in youth education, local expertise, and knowledge of the program's themes guide your experience. The program includes lodging, all meals, in-country transportation, health insurance, and experienced group leadership. Be prepared for substantial travel (5–8 hour train/bus trips) and varying internet connectivity, but know that you'll have support navigating these challenges while gaining unforgettable perspectives on Europe's political, cultural, and social landscape.
