About Journey to the Northern Sky Program
Journey to the Northern Sky is an 11-day wilderness adventure expedition in Ontario's James Bay Lowlands, designed for adventurers seeking an immersive northern experience without the physical demands of extensive portaging. Your adventure begins with a scenic float plane flight over Thunderhouse Falls, landing you 64 kilometers north of the last road on the pristine Missinaibi River. From this remote starting point, you'll paddle downstream through one of Canada's most significant northern estuaries, exploring gypsum caves, searching for fossils, navigating fun swift sections, and camping on gravel bars while surrounded by boreal wilderness. With clear northern skies, you may even witness the mesmerizing dance of the northern lights.
This expedition uniquely blends natural history with rich cultural experiences. Midway through your journey, you'll camp at Wayne's place near the confluence of the Abitibi and Moose Rivers, where you'll have the opportunity to connect with local knowledge and hospitality. You'll conclude your river adventure in Moose Factory, home to the Moose Cree people, where local guides will share the area's fascinating indigenous and colonial history—including its pivotal role in Canada's fur trade. From there, you'll paddle to Moosonee and board the iconic Polar Bear Express train for your journey home, creating a truly once-in-a-lifetime cultural and wilderness experience.
The program is led by professional guides from MHO Adventures (Missinaibi & Canadian River Outfitters) and includes comprehensive support: all meals from dinner on Day 1 through dinner on Day 11, group equipment, canoes, paddles, life jackets, tents, and safety gear including SAT phones and first aid kits. You'll stay in comfortable bed-and-breakfast accommodations the night before departure and after arriving in Cochrane, with camping accommodations throughout the river portion of the trip. The experience is graded as moderate skill level, making it accessible to families and friends seeking adventure without extensive prior paddling experience.
This adventure acknowledges that you are visiting the traditional territories of the Cree and Moose Cree Nations, recognized under the James Bay Treaty No. 9. By participating, you'll gain deep appreciation for northern Canadian ecology, indigenous cultures, and the human history of James Bay while creating unforgettable memories in one of North America's last true wilderness areas.
