About Missinaibi River: Fly Out Over Thunderhouse Falls Program

Experience an unforgettable 10-day whitewater canoeing expedition on the Missinaibi River in Northern Ontario, Canada. You'll paddle approximately 145 kilometers over 9 days through one of the most spectacular river corridors in Canada, navigating Class I to Class III rapids while camping beside some of the most dramatic natural features in the region. This adventure is designed for intermediate paddlers with a reasonable level of general fitness—you'll encounter longer days on the water and navigate 7 portages around stunning falls and canyons, making this the most challenging and rewarding of the three sections of the Missinaibi River.

The journey begins at Camp 95, a secluded bush road access point upstream of Mattice, where you'll start your expedition alongside professional guides who prioritize both instruction and community. As you progress downriver, you'll camp at spectacular sites positioned beside rapids and falls, including one campsite that evokes the feeling of a Caribbean beach. The highlight of your trip arrives around day 6 or 7 when you reach Thunderhouse Falls—a breathtaking campsite perched 150 feet above a dramatic canyon. Here, you'll spend time swimming, fishing, eating, and simply marveling at the natural wonder as the river plummets 300 feet below in a single day, dropping off the Canadian Shield onto the Hudson's Bay Lowlands.

Your final night together is spent at Bull Moose Bay, camped beneath the towering clay banks of the Lowlands, before a float plane arrives the next morning to fly you out and shuttle you back to your vehicles. Throughout the trip, you'll develop and practice your whitewater paddling skills in a supportive environment while building lasting connections with fellow adventurers. The program is conducted with deep respect for the traditional territories of the Cree, Moose Cree, and Anishinabek Nations, acknowledging the land's significance under the James Bay Treaty No. 9.

What's included in your $4,675 CAD adventure is comprehensive: one night of hotel accommodation in Kapuskasing, ON (double occupancy), all transportation to the put-in point, all meals from dinner on Day 1 through lunch on Day 10, professional guides, complete group equipment (canoes, paddles, PFDs, helmets, tents, thermarests, and waterproof barrels for personal gear), safety equipment including SAT phones and first aid kits, interior camping permits, your float plane exit from the river, and shuttle service back to your vehicle. Optional add-ons include airport pickup/drop-off from Timmins (add $75 + HST) and a single supplement ($200). This is an adventure for those seeking to challenge themselves in a pristine wilderness setting while developing genuine paddling skills under expert instruction.
