About ORCKA Canoe Tripping Level 1, 2 OR 3 Program
Join MHO Adventures for an immersive 6-day canoe instruction and wilderness leadership training program on Ontario's iconic French River. With over 15 years of experience delivering professional canoe instruction across Canada, MHO Adventures specializes in high-quality outdoor education designed to take your paddling and guiding skills to the next level—whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced trip leader.
This combined-level course allows you to work toward the certification that matches your current skills and experience. Your journey begins at MHO's Huntsville base, where you'll prepare for the expedition as a group and complete pre-trip lessons. If you're pursuing Level 3 certification, you'll also have the opportunity to teach your own lesson. The following five days are spent paddling and camping on the French River, which provides an ideal real-world backcountry setting for hands-on skill development and leadership training.
Level 1 is designed for those with little or no canoe tripping experience and introduces you to the fundamentals of safe and enjoyable wilderness travel. You'll learn trip planning and packing, basic navigation, camp setup, meal planning, and essential safety and teamwork skills. Level 2 builds on this foundation for experienced trippers, refining paddling and rescue techniques, deepening your understanding of group dynamics and risk management, and developing confidence in wilderness leadership. Level 3 prepares you to lead wilderness canoe expeditions with full professionalism, requiring significant prior experience (minimum 25 nights of backcountry tripping, 500+ kilometers paddled, and demonstrated leadership on multiple expeditions). You'll master advanced paddling, crisis management, navigation, and all aspects of expedition planning and execution.
Your course fee includes certified ORCKA instruction, multiple paddling certifications (ORCKA Canoe Tripping, Paddle Canada Intro Moving Water Tandem, and ORCKA Basic Canoeing), all group equipment and safety gear, canoes, paddles, personal flotation devices, helmets, interior camping permits, shuttle logistics, and meals from lunch on Day 1 through lunch on Day 6. Level 3 participants prepare one group meal themselves. You'll stay the first night at MHO's base facilities with tent camping available and access to barn amenities, then spend five nights in backcountry camps with all meals and equipment provided.
This program is perfect for anyone seeking structured wilderness education in a supportive environment led by expert instructors. Whether you want to gain confidence on the water, develop leadership capabilities, or earn professional guiding certifications, this hands-on expedition delivers real-world training in one of Canada's most beautiful and challenging paddling destinations.
