About River Roots Program Program

River Roots is an intensive 42-day guide training and leadership development program based in Huntsville, Ontario, designed to transform you into a certified outdoor professional ready for careers in adventure tourism and backcountry guiding. Over six weeks, you'll complete 5+ professional certifications, undertake a challenging 21-day James Bay Expedition, and participate in specialized workshops covering both hard technical skills and soft leadership competencies. This is not a traditional classroom experience—it's an experiential learning program that pushes you to challenge your physical and emotional limits while building a professional network in the outdoor industry.

You'll be fully immersed in the program, living in tent camps at the base near Mary Lake in Huntsville, with access to indoor facilities for classes, meetings, gear preparation, showers, and internet. The program combines on-site training with extended backcountry expeditions, where you'll learn canoeing, wilderness navigation, and expedition leadership in real conditions. Whether you're paddling whitewater rivers, camping in the James Bay wilderness, or training at the home base, every day is designed to expand your capabilities and confidence as an outdoor professional.

Food is fully included in the program cost, with meals prepared communally by students throughout the 42 days. You'll cook backcountry meals over campfires during expeditions, prepare food in kitchens at various locations, and occasionally enjoy catered meals—building practical wilderness living skills alongside your technical training. The program accommodates dietary restrictions and allergies, working closely with you to ensure your needs are met.

River Roots attracts students with diverse motivations: some seek to launch careers in outdoor education or guiding, others pursue personal growth and self-discovery, and many simply want an unforgettable adventure and the certifications to back it up. The program has been described by graduates and industry professionals as a viable alternative to multi-year post-secondary education, equipping you with employment-ready credentials and practical experience within six weeks. By the end, you'll have genuine expertise, professional certifications, expedition experience, and meaningful connections with fellow outdoor professionals.

This program is ideal for anyone ready to be fully present, willing to learn through experience, and prepared to be pushed beyond your comfort zone. You'll return home transformed—with stories to last a lifetime, professional qualifications, and the confidence of having completed a genuine wilderness expedition.
