About Snake River – Yukon Program
Experience one of Canada's most pristine wilderness canoe adventures on the Snake River in East Central Yukon Territory. This 13-day expedition takes you through one of the largest untouched watersheds in the world, where you'll paddle 300 kilometers of stunning river terrain while exploring the traditional lands of the Gwitch'in Dene and Na-Cho Nyak Dun First Nations.
Your journey begins in Whitehorse, where you'll spend your first night in a hotel getting to know your group and organizing gear. The next day, you'll drive north to Mayo and board a float plane to Duo Lakes, where you'll warm up your canoe skills before portaging 1.5 kilometers to the Snake River itself. The river presents an exciting challenge with continuous Class 1 and 2 rapids in the upper section as you descend from the Wreneke Mountains, then mellows into multiple days of exceptional paddling with Class 2 rapids and a few Class 3 sections.
The Snake River landscape is truly unforgettable. You'll paddle past layered ridges streaked in rust, ochre, and maroon, with lofty glacial peaks like Mount MacDonald—the highest peak in the Mackenzie Mountains—towering above the swift-flowing waters. Over 13 days, you'll encounter the dramatic Snake River Canyon, a stunning waterfall campsite with hiking opportunities, abundant wildlife including Woodland caribou and Dall sheep, and wild blueberries. The river is mostly Class 2 with a few Class 3 rapids, making it suitable for paddlers with previous whitewater experience.
This is an all-inclusive wilderness experience designed for intermediate-level paddlers seeking authentic adventure. Professional guides lead the expedition, handling all logistics while you focus on the paddling, hiking, and exploring. The itinerary includes gourmet meals prepared in the wilderness, comfortable camping with provided tents and thermarests, all necessary paddling equipment, and complete safety gear including satellite phone and first aid kits. You'll have time to explore side valleys, hike to scenic vistas, and truly disconnect from civilization while traveling respectfully through this extraordinary landscape.
The Snake River is one of six major tributaries of the Peel watershed and sits alongside other legendary canoe routes like the Hart, Wind, and Bonnet Plume rivers. Whether you're an experienced paddler looking for a new challenge or an intermediate boater ready to expand your skills in a remote setting, this 13-day Yukon adventure offers unparalleled wilderness immersion, world-class paddling, and memories of one of North America's last truly wild river systems.
