About Spanish River Family Adventure – 4 Days Program

Experience an unforgettable 4-day whitewater paddling adventure on the Spanish River, one of Ontario's most scenic and historically rich waterways. Located in the Sudbury District and flowing through Spanish River Provincial Park, this family-friendly expedition covers over 53 kilometers of moderate whitewater as you journey from "The Forks"—where the East and West branches converge—down to the Elbow. Your adventure begins with a unique Via Rail train ride directly into the park, eliminating lengthy portages and getting you straight to the action.

This trip is designed for paddlers of all experience levels who want to challenge themselves with whitewater instruction and develop real skills in a supportive group environment. Your professional guides will spend dedicated time teaching you whitewater techniques to prepare you for the days ahead, ensuring you feel confident navigating the river's rapids and features. Beyond paddling, you'll swim in the Spanish River's distinctive dark blue waters, fish in pristine wilderness, and immerse yourself in the classic Canadian Shield landscape—all while keeping an eye out for moose and other wildlife.

The Spanish River holds deep cultural significance as part of the traditional territories of the Anishinabek and Mississauga Nations, recognized under the Robinson-Huron Treaty (1861). As a participant, you'll be welcomed as a visitor to this protected land and can develop a respectful connection to the river's natural and cultural heritage. The river itself has a fascinating geography, sourced from both Biscotasi Lake (West branch) and Duke Lake (East branch), and historically served as a vital transportation corridor—today it's primarily enjoyed by recreational paddlers seeking authentic wilderness experiences.

All meals from lunch on Day 1 through lunch on Day 4 are provided, along with comprehensive group equipment including canoes, paddles, PFDs, helmets, tents, and thermarests. Interior camping permits and provincial park fees are covered, as is your shuttle back to your vehicle and parking for the entire duration. You'll receive a 60-liter waterproof barrel for personal gear storage and have access to professional safety equipment including SAT phones and rescue kits. Pre-trip accommodations and sleeping bag rentals are available for an additional fee, and you'll meet your group at 9am in Cartier on Day 1.

This adventure is perfect for families, friends, and anyone seeking to escape their daily routines while building friendships with like-minded outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you're a first-time whitewater paddler or someone looking to refine your skills in a spectacular natural setting, the Spanish River Family Adventure offers the ideal balance of challenge, safety, and unforgettable wilderness experiences on one of Canada's most beautiful rivers.
