About Upper Missinaibi Whitewater Adventure Program
Experience nine unforgettable days paddling the Upper Missinaibi River, one of Canada's most storied waterways. This guided whitewater adventure takes you 120+ kilometers down the Missinaibi, a Canadian Heritage River that flows through Ontario's boreal landscape from Missinaibi Lake northward toward James Bay. You'll navigate over 20 sets of rapids while descending 200 feet through Precambrian granite, bogs, and marshes—all within a protected Provincial Park setting that feels genuinely remote and pristine.
The Missinaibi holds deep historical and cultural significance. The Anishinaabe peoples lived connected to this land for millennia, using the river as a vital transportation corridor. Later, European voyageurs relied on the same waters to travel between Lake Superior and James Bay, establishing trading posts along the way. As you paddle, you'll encounter cabin ruins from this era, slowly being reclaimed by the forest—tangible connections to the region's rich past. You're visiting traditional territories of the Cree and Anishinabek Nations, recognized under the James Bay Treaty No. 9, adding cultural depth to your wilderness experience.
This trip is ideally suited for whitewater beginners and intermediate paddlers. The rapids progress naturally, allowing newcomers to build confidence and technique while still offering experienced paddlers plenty of skill-building opportunities in reading and running whitewater. The pace is deliberately relaxed, giving you time for instruction, practice, and genuine rest. You will need reasonable general fitness—expect a few longer days on the water and a 1-kilometer portage around Greenhill Rapids—but the trip remains accessible to those willing to challenge themselves moderately.
Your nine days include professional guides, all paddling equipment (canoes, paddles, PFDs, helmets), tents, sleeping mats, and comprehensive safety gear (satellite phone, first aid and rescue kits). Meals are provided throughout, from dinner on day one through lunch on day nine, and you'll cook and eat together by the campfire—a genuine backcountry experience. You'll camp beside roaring rapids and cascading falls, fish in eddies, and enjoy gourmet food prepared in the wilderness. Airport pickup and drop-off from Timmins, Ontario, plus all transportation to and from the river, are included, along with interior camping permits and vehicle parking.
Whether you're seeking to develop whitewater skills, reconnect with Canada's wilderness heritage, or simply experience one of the country's most powerful rivers, the Upper Missinaibi offers a transformative adventure. This is backcountry paddling at its finest—challenging enough to build competence, supported enough to feel safe, and beautiful enough to change how you see wild places.
