About Advanced Fashion Design Semester Program
Immerse yourself in one of the world's most vibrant fashion capitals with AIFS Abroad's Advanced Fashion Design Semester at Central Saint Martins (CSM), part of the University of the Arts London. Based at The Atelier in the Archway campus, this program offers emerging designers a chance to study alongside peers from around the globe while developing bold, original ideas in fashion. You'll earn 12–16 semester credits through six mandatory courses and optional electives, all taught in English by expert faculty who bring radical, experimental approaches to design education.
The program begins with three shared mandatory courses—Creative Histories, London Cultural Studies, and Understanding Contemporary Cultures—designed to build networks across the entire UAL Study Abroad cohort and ground your creative practice in critical cultural awareness. Through field trips, museum visits, and guided walks across London's museums, galleries, and cultural landmarks, you'll develop research skills as a city explorer and investigator. You'll examine how creativity intersects with social purpose, consumer culture, and contemporary visual narratives, culminating in presentations, essays, and speculative projects that bridge professional practice with industry insight.
The core of your studies centers on three advanced fashion courses: Advanced Fashion Design (3 credits), where you'll work in studio-based workshops developing research methods, design techniques, and sustainable practice before collaborating on a final showcase; Advanced Fashion On/Off the Body (2 credits), which connects fashion to societal issues through photography, styling, and world-building; and Visual Identity and Communication (1 credit), where you'll master multiple formats—from traditional portfolios to performance and moving image—to present your design vision. You may also choose electives in Fashion Biomaterials (exploring sustainable living materials and biotextiles) or Fashion Jewellery (designing and crafting pieces that communicate meaning and values).
London itself becomes your classroom. You'll navigate a historically complex, creatively dynamic capital while building your international fashion network alongside established tutors, designers, and artisans. The program culminates in a final showcase—presented as a catwalk, performative installation, or pop-up exhibition—where you'll present your work to peers and faculty. Upon completion, you'll receive an official Record of Study and Achievement from the University of the Arts London, which transfers to your home institution. This semester is ideal for fashion students with at least one year of prior design study who are ready to push boundaries, embrace creative risk-taking, and develop the critical thinking and technical skills needed for advanced fashion careers. Attendance is mandatory, grades are required (no pass/fail options), and you'll leave with not just credits but a portfolio of work, a portfolio of skills, and international creative connections that will shape your future in design.
