About Australia New Zealand Service Program
Embark on a transformative 20-day service-learning adventure across Australia and New Zealand, where you'll combine hands-on conservation work with unforgettable exploration of two of the world's most spectacular destinations. Your journey begins in Cairns, Australia, where you'll partner with marine biologists from Reef Teach to become a Great Barrier Reef advocate. After classroom training in marine conservation techniques, you'll venture out on the water to survey reefs, collect data, and visit a turtle rehabilitation center—hands-on work that has made a real impact on local communities and even earned former participants media recognition. You'll experience the magic of snorkeling or scuba diving among sea turtles and vibrant marine life on the Great Barrier Reef itself, then immerse yourself in Aboriginal culture in Kuranda with boomerang throwing and didgeridoo lessons.
From there, your adventure shifts inland to the Yungaburra region, where you'll contribute to wildlife and flora rehabilitation projects while exploring the stunning Atherton Tablelands. You'll spot wallabies in suburbia, climb the Great Escarpment, and search for the smallest kangaroo species in Australia. A quick flight takes you to Brisbane and then to Moreton Island, the world's third-largest sand island, where you can choose your own adventure—feed wild dolphins, sandboard down massive dunes, relax on pristine beaches, explore the outback on a desert safari, or embark on a whale-watching cruise.
Your time in Australia concludes in Sydney, one of the world's most iconic cities. You'll visit the legendary Opera House and Botanical Gardens, stroll the famous Bondi and Manly beaches, explore the vibrant neighborhoods of Surry Hills, and sample Sydney's world-class fusion food scene—all culminating in a celebration dinner with 360° views of the sparkling harbor. Then you'll cross into New Zealand, landing in the adventure capital of Queenstown, where you'll zoom through dramatic rock canyons on the world's fastest jet boat before cruising through the breathtaking Milford Sound, one of Earth's most gorgeous destinations, where you'll spot penguins, seals, and dolphins.
Throughout the program, you'll stay in safe, centrally located accommodations chosen for their personal touch rather than chain anonymity: a few blocks from Cairns' Esplanade, resort-style lodging on Moreton Island, the heart of trendy Surry Hills in Sydney, and a short waterfront walk from Queenstown's vibrant Shotover Street. The program includes ground transportation, all meals (except some lunches and beverages), expert guides and chaperones, and program-related activities and admissions. You'll experience authentic local cuisines reflecting Australia and New Zealand's multicultural heritage—from Greek, Italian, Thai, and Indian to adventurous options like kangaroo, crocodile, and emu. This is an ideal program for high school students (grades 9-12) seeking to combine meaningful community service, wildlife conservation, cultural immersion, and adventure in one life-changing journey.
