About Belize Scuba Certification & Volunteer Trip Program
Join Travel For Teens on an unforgettable week-long adventure to a private island in the Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve Park, located off the coast of Belize. You'll be based on your own private island, where you'll work alongside professional marine biologists with a leading NGO focused on protecting the Belize Barrier Reef—the second-largest reef system in the world. This is a rare opportunity to combine hands-on marine conservation volunteering with the option to earn your PADI Scuba Certification in the warm Caribbean Sea.
If you're not yet certified, you'll complete your PADI Open Water Certification right on the island, learning to dive in the pristine waters where you'll immediately put your new skills to use. Certified divers jump straight into volunteer projects alongside the marine team. Your week is packed with meaningful conservation work, including controlling invasive lionfish populations (learning to safely spearfish and assist with data collection), surveying coral reefs, monitoring marine wildlife, and participating in pollution cleanups. Each day features multiple dives, including a spectacular night dive when the ocean transforms into a completely different world.
Beyond the underwater work, you'll attend presentations and discussions with marine professionals on topics like invasive species mitigation and ocean plastic pollution, building your understanding of reef conservation threats and solutions. The island setting creates an intimate community—you and your fellow travelers bond quickly, and many participants describe leaving the trip feeling like family. During downtime, you can kayak, paddleboard in turquoise waters, or simply relax in a hammock and soak in the island breeze.
This program is ideal for high school students (grades 9-12) interested in marine science, environmental conservation, and adventure. You'll earn up to 20 hours of service with an established marine conservation organization and have the option to pursue PADI specialty certifications in marine conservation focus areas (Coral Reef Conservation, Fish Identification, Invasive Lionfish, Shark Conservation, or Underwater Naturalist). All meals are prepared on-island by local chefs using fresh, authentic Belizean ingredients, with accommodations that are clean, safe, and comfortable. The program includes ground transportation, accommodation, chaperones, guides, and all meals—making this a fully supported, transformative summer experience for conservation-minded teens.
