About Belize Ultimate Scuba & Service Program
Spend 14 days on your own private island in Belize, home to the world's second-largest barrier reef system. This service-learning program combines PADI scuba certification training with hands-on marine conservation volunteer work in one of the planet's most biodiverse underwater ecosystems. Whether you're already certified or earning your certification for the first time, you'll work alongside professional marine biologists from a leading NGO to protect this fragile reef environment.
If you're not yet certified, you'll complete your PADI Open Water certification directly in the warm Caribbean Sea rather than a pool—an unforgettable way to learn. Certified divers jump straight into volunteer projects. Your main conservation focus will be controlling invasive lionfish populations, which lack natural predators and threaten native fish and coral. You'll learn to safely spearfish lionfish, assist with specimen dissection to collect monitoring data, conduct coral reef surveys, complete marine wildlife surveys, and participate in coral reef restoration efforts. Daily presentations and discussions with marine professionals cover topics like lionfish mitigation strategies and ocean plastic pollution.
The program balances intensive conservation work with island life and adventure. You'll enjoy night dives to experience the ocean's nocturnal transformation, kayak and paddleboard in turquoise waters, and relax on hammocks between dives. Days 7-9 include a mainland adventure where you'll hike to hidden waterfalls, swim in jungle rivers, and take wildlife boat cruises spotting monkeys, crocodiles, manatees, and birds. By day two on the island, all non-certified divers are ready to dive, so the entire group works together on increasingly advanced projects throughout the second week.
You'll earn up to 40 hours of service credit and can pursue optional PADI specialty certifications with a marine conservation focus (Coral Reef Conservation, Fish Identification, Invasive Lionfish, Shark Conservation, Underwater Naturalist) or diving skills focus (Deep Diver, Underwater Photographer, and others). The tiny island setting creates exceptional group bonding—participants consistently report leaving feeling like family. All meals feature authentic Belizean cuisine prepared by island chefs using fresh local ingredients, with accommodations that are clean, safe, and comfortable. This program is ideal for high school students (grades 9-12) passionate about marine conservation, adventure, and making a real environmental impact.
The program includes ground transportation, accommodation, chaperones and guides, all meals, and program activities. You'll need to arrange international airfare and provide your own wetsuit, fins, and mask; all other scuba gear is supplied. PADI certification fees ($295 for Open Water + $246 eLearning, paid directly to PADI) apply only if uncertified, plus a $350 intra-trip flight from Belize City to Placencia.
