About Costa Rica for Middle School: Hola Costa Rica Program
Hola Costa Rica is an 11-day summer program designed specifically for middle school students looking to experience their first independent trip abroad. You'll spend over two weeks immersed in Costa Rican culture, performing meaningful service work in two different communities while exploring some of the most spectacular natural landscapes in Central America. The program is intentionally paced to help you adjust to the adventure of traveling internationally without your parents, offering a stress-free yet enriching experience that captures everything Costa Rica has to offer.
Your service work forms the heart of this program. You'll spend up to 20 hours volunteering with local associations in Sámara and another community, working directly with children and youth from areas with limited resources. Your projects typically involve art classes, English language instruction, environmental conservation tasks, and general community maintenance—meaningful work that creates real connections with local people. This isn't superficial tourism; you'll see the tangible impact of your contributions and build relationships with the communities you serve.
The adventure portion is equally impressive. You'll navigate the world-renowned Pacuare River on an overnight whitewater rafting expedition suitable for all skill levels, spending a night in a rainforest lodge where you might spot monkeys, sloths, and colorful birds. You'll zipline through the jungle canopy near the active Arenal Volcano, swim in natural hot springs heated by geothermal activity, and dive into a refreshing 210-foot waterfall pool deep in the jungle. You'll take surfing lessons at Sámara Beach, famous for its perfect beginner waves, and paddle out on a sea kayaking adventure to snorkel around Chora Island.
Your itinerary takes you through diverse Costa Rican regions: San José for arrival and orientation, Turrialba with its famous volcano and mountain lodge views, La Fortuna near the breathtaking Arenal, and the coastal paradise of Sámara Beach. You'll stay in small, family-run hotels rather than large chains—places where staff know your name and you experience authentic local hospitality. Food is a cultural experience: expect big, savory Costa Rican breakfasts with tropical fruits, rice and beans, fresh vegetables, and Caribbean spices. The program fully accommodates dietary restrictions including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free needs.
Travel For Teens provides comprehensive support throughout. You'll travel with experienced chaperones and local guides, daily parent communication with photos and recaps, secure accommodations in central locations, and all ground transportation, meals, and program activities included in tuition. Optional group flights from Miami make logistics simple. By the end of 11 days, you'll say "Pura Vida!" and return home with lifelong friendships, meaningful memories of service, and confidence from your first independent international adventure.
