About Costa Rica for Older Teens: Adventure and Service Program
Join this 11-day summer adventure in Costa Rica designed specifically for high school juniors and seniors who want to make a real impact while experiencing some of the world's most thrilling outdoor activities. You'll split your time between meaningful community service in two different locations and exhilarating adventures that showcase why Costa Rica is a premier destination for adventure travelers.
Your journey begins in San Jose before heading to Turrialba, where you'll embark on a two-day whitewater rafting expedition down the Pacuare River—consistently rated one of the top rafting rivers globally. Stay overnight in a rainforest eco-lodge on the river's banks, spot monkeys and sloths in their natural habitat, and swim in jungle waterfalls. From there, you'll move to La Fortuna near the stunning Arenal Volcano, where you'll zipline through the rainforest canopy and relax in natural hot springs formed by geothermal activity.
The service component takes you to Sámara Beach, a charming surf town, where you'll work directly with local children at a community association focused on educational and artistic development. Your 20 hours of volunteer work might include leading art projects, teaching English, environmental conservation tasks, or helping maintain community spaces. This isn't superficial volunteer tourism—the organization has partnered with Travel For Teens for a decade, creating meaningful, ongoing relationships with local families and youth.
Beyond service and major adventures, expect surfing lessons at famous beginner-friendly breaks, sea kayaking to pristine islands for snorkeling, swimming beneath 210-foot waterfalls, and experiencing authentic Costa Rican culture through local food, independent travel between cities, and interaction with the friendly locals (ticos). You'll stay in smaller, family-run hotels rather than chain accommodations, eat traditional tico cuisine with hearty breakfasts and tropical fruits, and develop genuine friendships with peers from around the world who share your sense of adventure and social responsibility.
This program is designed to nurture independence, cultural awareness, and leadership skills while delivering an unforgettable summer of purpose-driven travel. Whether you're passionate about environmental conservation, want to practice Spanish and cultural exchange, or simply crave a balance of meaningful impact and thrilling outdoor experiences, this Costa Rica journey offers the authentic adventure you're seeking.
