About Costa Rica Wildlife Rescue and Service Program
Join this 11-day immersive wildlife service program in Costa Rica, where you'll earn up to 30 hours of community service volunteering at two premier animal rescue centers while experiencing one of Central America's most biodiverse destinations. During your first three days, you'll work at a specialized rescue center dedicated to rehabilitating Costa Rican wildlife that has suffered from illegal pet trading and tourism exploitation. Under the guidance of professional staff—and in compliance with Costa Rican wildlife protection laws—you'll assist with feeding animals, creating enrichment toys, and maintaining habitats for monkeys, sloths, and other species. Your next two days take you to Rescate, the largest and oldest animal sanctuary in Costa Rica, a sprawling 36-acre refuge with over 30 years of experience breeding endangered species and restoring natural habitats. Here, you'll encounter jaguars, tapirs, reptiles, birds, and thousands of animals in various stages of rehabilitation and release preparation.
After your meaningful conservation work, the program shifts to adventure and relaxation as you travel to Manuel Antonio, one of Costa Rica's most renowned beach destinations. You'll take a professional surf lesson on the Pacific coast, hike to the stunning Diamante Waterfall and swim in its cerulean pools, go rappelling in Las Tumbas cave, and explore Manuel Antonio National Park—where you'll spot wild relatives of the animals you've been helping rehabilitate. This multi-faceted experience allows you to witness firsthand how rescue centers directly impact wild populations and ecosystem recovery. Throughout the trip, you'll stay in small, family-run hotels in centrally located neighborhoods, eat authentic Costa Rican cuisine (with full accommodation for dietary restrictions), and travel with experienced TFT chaperones and local guides who provide cultural context and logistical support.
The program is designed for high school students (grades 9-12) seeking hands-on conservation experience combined with adventure and cultural immersion. You'll work alongside conservation professionals, understand the realities of wildlife rehabilitation, and gain practical skills in habitat maintenance and animal care. This is not a passive observation experience—you'll actively contribute to the daily operations of world-class rescue centers while learning about Costa Rica's critical biodiversity challenges and solutions. By the end of 11 days, you'll return home with documented service hours, new friendships, surf skills, and a deep appreciation for wildlife protection and Costa Rican culture. The program balances meaningful work with adventure activities, ensuring you experience both the serious mission of conservation and the joy of exploring one of the world's most beautiful natural destinations.
