About Greece: Sea Turtle Conservation Trip Program
Join Travel For Teens on a transformative 10-day summer program in Greece where you'll combine meaningful marine conservation work with cultural exploration across two stunning destinations. Based primarily on the island of Kefalonia in the Ionian Sea, you'll partner with Wildlife Sense Kefalonia, a dedicated wildlife organization protecting sea turtle populations that nest on local beaches. Your service work will include evening patrols to monitor nesting turtles, tagging turtles for scientific tracking, collecting behavioral data, and conducting community health and safety talks about sea turtle conservation—earning up to 30 hours of documented service. While turtles are wild animals and sightings aren't guaranteed, you'll be prepared for early mornings and the unpredictable excitement that comes with real field research.
Beyond conservation work, you'll experience Kefalonia's dramatic limestone cliffs, white sandy beaches, and charming seaside towns away from typical tourist crowds. Your days will balance service with adventure: kayak and snorkel in turquoise Ionian waters, explore mysterious sea caves, relax on pristine beaches, and enjoy authentic Greek cuisine at local establishments. You'll participate in a traditional cooking lesson in Kefalonia's culinary heart, preparing and eating dishes made with fresh tomatoes, local feta, and Mediterranean ingredients that define one of the world's healthiest diets.
The program concludes with two days in Athens, where you'll step back nearly 4,000 years into the birthplace of Western civilization. You'll stand atop the magnificent Acropolis to marvel at the Parthenon, wander through vibrant markets filled with fresh food and handmade goods, and celebrate with a special dinner on a rooftop terrace overlooking the glittering nighttime cityscape. Throughout the trip, you'll stay in carefully selected small, family-run hotels in safe, centrally located areas—beachside in Kefalonia for easy access to turtle patrols and within walking distance of Athens's main attractions.
This program is designed for high school students (grades 9-12) seeking an authentic cultural immersion combined with real environmental impact. Travel For Teens prioritizes local connections, genuine interactions with hospitable Greek residents, and experiences that go beyond typical teen travel. The organization consistently earns "Top Youth Travel Organization" awards and maintains strong relationships with local partners. All breakfasts, dinners, ground transportation, guides, chaperones, and program activities are included in your tuition, though you'll cover airfare separately (with optional group flights available from New York). Whether you're passionate about marine biology, eager to explore ancient history, or simply ready for an adventure that combines purpose with exploration, this Greece sea turtle program offers a life-changing experience you won't find anywhere else.
