About Hybrid Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Program
The Hybrid Wilderness First Responder (WFR) course is the definitive medical training program for leaders and professionals working in remote, outdoor, and low-resource environments. Whether you're an outdoor educator, guide, military personnel, search and rescue team member, researcher, or disaster relief worker, this internationally recognized certification equips you with essential medical knowledge and practical skills to assess and manage health emergencies in isolated and extreme settings—where professional help may be days or weeks away.
This hybrid format combines 30 hours of online e-learning with an intensive 5-day in-person training session at MHO Adventures' beautiful 20-acre base camp just south of Huntsville, Ontario. The curriculum is comprehensive and practical, covering the principles and skills you need to handle medical problems in wilderness and remote contexts. Upon successful completion, you'll earn three certifications: Wilderness First Responder, Anaphylaxis, and BLS/Healthcare Provider-level CPR—all recognized internationally through Wilderness Medical Associates International, a leading global provider of wilderness medical training.
Your in-person training takes place at MHO's scenic lakeside facility on Mary Lake, surrounded by forested trails perfect for running, biking, or walking. The setting is designed to balance rigorous training with community and relaxation—evenings often gather around the fire pit where you'll connect with fellow participants and reflect on the day's learning. The base camp atmosphere creates an immersive, supportive learning environment.
Accommodation and meal options are flexible and affordable. You can tent camp for $100 for the duration, stay in a shared or private heated bunkie ($50–$125/night, reduced from the standard $195/night rate), or book a nearby motel-style room at the neighboring Muskoka Bible Centre. For meals, choose a full meal plan with three hot home-cooked meals daily ($375 for the course), or just the hot lunch option ($125) if you're commuting. All meals are prepared onsite and served family-style, fostering connection among participants.
Four session dates are available in 2026: April 26–30, May 20–24, August 17–21, and October 13–17. The May session currently has 7 spots available; the April session is full but you can join the waitlist. Registration is straightforward through the online portal. This course is ideal if you're preparing for leadership roles in wilderness settings, seeking professional credentials in remote medicine, or committed to being a capable first responder in situations where conventional emergency services may not be accessible.
