About Media and Communication Semester in London Program
Study media and communication at the prestigious London College of Communication, part of the University of the Arts London, during a transformative semester abroad. This program immerses you in one of the world's leading creative capitals, offering hands-on training in modern media production, journalism, brand storytelling, and critical cultural analysis. You'll earn 12 to 16 semester credits through a carefully structured curriculum combining mandatory core courses with flexible electives that match your interests.
The program begins with three foundational courses shared across UAL's study abroad programs: Creative Histories, which examines creative practice from historical and cultural perspectives while building networks with students from Central Saint Martins and London College of Fashion; London Cultural Studies, where you'll become a city explorer conducting field trips and guided walks through London's diverse neighborhoods and cultural landmarks; and Understanding Contemporary Cultures, which challenges you to analyze consumerism, luxury narratives, and social justice through critical lenses. These courses emphasize collaborative learning, creative risk-taking, and the development of professional skills applicable to the creative industries.
Three additional core courses form the heart of the Media and Communication focus. Introduction to Media Communication guides you through the evolving media landscape—from printed press and social media to podcasting and emerging technologies—with practical tasks and field trips that build your research and presentation abilities. Creative and Technical Skills provides hands-on training in audio and visual content creation, covering film production, editing, storyboarding, and audio recording with access to professional equipment. Brand Storytelling teaches you how to craft compelling narratives for brands across industries, exploring ethics in communication and how storytelling drives social change, culminating in a 360° campaign project.
You'll choose two additional electives from Print and Online Journalism, which develops your interviewing, feature writing, and article production skills with attention to emerging AI in journalism and ethical standards, or Activism and Social Justice, which explores how artistic practices drive social change through case studies in racial justice, climate action, and indigenous rights, with field trips to activist hubs in East London. All courses require full attendance and culminate in graded assessments—no pass/fail options are available. You'll receive an official Record of Study and Achievement from the University of the Arts London, transferable to your home institution.
London itself becomes your classroom and laboratory. As a global media and cultural hub, the city offers unparalleled opportunities to study contemporary media production, visit world-class museums and galleries, observe activist movements firsthand, and network with international creative professionals. The program is ideal for undergraduate and graduate students with at least one year of university study who are committed to careers in media, journalism, communications, design, or the creative industries. You'll return home not just with credits and a transcript, but with a portfolio of work, professional connections, and a transformed understanding of how media shapes culture in the 21st century.
