About Peru Service Program
Peru Service is an 11-day summer program offering high school students (grades 9-12) a transformative blend of meaningful community service and cultural exploration in Peru's iconic Sacred Valley. You'll split your time between structured service projects in the communities of Misminay and Urubamba and visits to some of the world's most remarkable archaeological sites, including Machu Picchu, Coricancha, and the Incan ruins of Ollantaytambo and Moray.
Your service days will be genuinely impactful. You'll work on construction projects like building houses and improving kitchen facilities, assist with farming activities, and teach English as a second language to local elementary school children. In Misminay, you'll stay in private rooms attached to local family homes, eating communal meals and preparing traditional Peruvian dishes like pachamanca with your host families—a level of cultural immersion that few teen programs offer. You can earn up to 20 hours of community service credits while forming lasting bonds with the children and adults you meet.
Beyond service, you'll experience the Sacred Valley's breathtaking landscapes and rich heritage. You'll hike to Machu Picchu's Sun Gate for sweeping views of this New Seven Wonder of the World, explore the Incan and Colonial architecture of Cusco around Plaza de Armas, relax in natural volcanic hot springs, and browse vibrant handicraft markets where you can haggle for authentic alpaca wool weavings and handmade souvenirs. A hands-on chocolate-making class and cultural walking tours deepen your understanding of Peruvian life both ancient and modern.
The program prioritizes authentic, local experiences over typical tourist infrastructure. You'll stay in small, family-run 3-star hotels and a community homestay rather than impersonal chains, eat at local restaurants serving regional specialties, and travel with experienced local guides who provide insider knowledge. Travel For Teens handles all ground transportation, accommodations, meals, activities, and supervision—you just bring your curiosity and willingness to serve. This program is ideal for students seeking genuine cultural connection, meaningful volunteer work, and unforgettable memories in one of South America's most enchanting regions.
