About South Korea Discovery Program
South Korea Discovery is a 10-day summer travel program designed for high school students (grades 9–12) seeking an immersive cultural experience in one of East Asia's most dynamic countries. You'll travel through three distinct regions—starting in the vibrant port city of Busan, moving through the historic cultural heart of Gyeongju, and culminating in the modern metropolis of Seoul—experiencing the full spectrum of Korean life, from ancient temples to cutting-edge K-pop culture.
Your journey begins in Busan, where you'll explore the Gamcheon Cultural Village, browse the famous Jagalchi Fish Market, and relax on Haeundae Beach, one of South Korea's busiest and most beloved coastal destinations. You'll taste authentic Korean seafood and begin your culinary adventure in this bustling port city known for hosting the international film festival.
In Gyeongju, the ancient capital of the Silla Dynasty, you'll step into Korea's rich historical past. You'll walk through Tumuli Park with its royal burial mounds, visit the serene Anapji Ponds, and experience something truly unique: an overnight stay at Golgulsa Temple on a mountain retreat. Here, you'll learn about Sunmudo, a Buddhist martial art form of Taekwondo, wake at dawn to pray with the monks, participate in a traditional breakfast ceremony, and enjoy a tea ceremony with the head monk—an intimate cultural exchange you won't find elsewhere.
Your program culminates in Seoul, where tradition meets modernity. You'll visit the stunning Gyeongbokgung Palace, dress in traditional hanbok (Korean clothing) for memorable photos, take a private Korean cooking class where you'll learn to prepare classic dishes like bibimbap and doenjangjjigae, and dance Gangnam Style in an energetic K-pop dance class. You'll also visit the DMZ and learn the history of North Korea's tunnel attempts, adding a geopolitical dimension to your cultural understanding. Throughout the trip, you'll earn 5 hours of community service volunteering with a local organization.
Accommodations are carefully selected small, family-run hotels in central, walkable locations—in Seoul's vibrant Insadong District, Busan's Haeundae Beach area, and near temples in Gyeongju—ensuring you stay close to attractions and experience local neighborhoods like a resident. The program includes ground transportation, all accommodations, professional chaperones and guides, program activities and admissions, breakfasts and dinners, and tips. You'll eat at authentic local establishments featuring Korean specialties—pork and beef BBQs, various soups, bibimbap, dumplings, kimchi, and traditional desserts—with full accommodation for dietary restrictions. This program is ideal for teens seeking a global perspective, interested in Asian culture, culinary experiences, and wanting to see how ancient traditions coexist with modern innovation.
