About Spain: Spanish Language & Culture Program
This summer program immerses you in Spain's rich history, culture, and language through an intensive two-week experience spanning Madrid, Córdoba, Granada, and Toledo. You'll begin your journey in vibrant Madrid, exploring iconic museums and neighborhoods like the Prado Museum and the historic Hapsburgs District, then travel to Córdoba to discover UNESCO World Heritage sites that reflect Spain's multicultural heritage. The heart of your program takes place in Granada, a stunning city renowned for its architecture and cultural vibrancy, where you'll live with a local host family and attend four hours of daily Spanish language instruction at the Centro de Lenguas y Educación Intercultural, divided into small classes by proficiency level.
Your language learning extends far beyond the classroom. You'll develop Spanish skills through 25+ hours of formal classes combined with experiential learning—music, film, city scavenger hunts, field trips, and interactive workshops. You'll participate in peer-to-peer exchanges with your host siblings, attend cultural events including flamenco shows, explore the stunning Alhambra and local museums, and engage in outdoor activities like hiking and water sports. This cohort-based approach, fundamental to The Experiment's pedagogy, means your group becomes your learning community, facilitated by experienced program leaders.
Your homestay experience is central to the program. Living with a Spanish family provides authentic cultural immersion and opportunities to practice Spanish in daily life while sharing meals and activities with your hosts. You'll also engage with local community leaders and participate in workshops emphasizing inclusive community-building, connecting language learning to real social impact. The program wraps up in Toledo with group reflection before your departure.
Be prepared for Spain's intense summer heat, significant walking throughout cities, and the importance of being an adventurous eater—your hosts take pride in sharing traditional Spanish cuisine. While internet access is limited, you'll have support from trained group leaders and local staff who create safe spaces for all participants, discuss cultural norms during orientation, and manage all in-country logistics. This program is ideal for high school students with at least one year of Spanish language study who want to combine serious language development with meaningful cultural exchange and personal growth.
