About Study Abroad in Athens, Greece - The American College of Greece Spring Program
Immerse yourself in one of Europe's most historic and vibrant cities by spending a semester studying at DEREE – The American College of Greece, the oldest and largest independent American-sponsored university in Europe. Founded in 1875 and uniquely accredited by American standards, this institution offers you access to over 1,000 courses across virtually every academic discipline. You'll study alongside a student body that is 85% Greek, giving you authentic opportunities to build friendships with local students and experience genuine Greek campus life.
Your academic experience is completely flexible through the Full Curriculum program, which allows you to select any course from ACG's extensive offerings (subject to prerequisites). You'll take between 4-5 courses for a total of 15 semester credits, with all classes taught in English and meeting Monday through Friday for 3 hours per week. Whether your interests lie in business, sciences, humanities, arts, languages, or specialized fields like archaeology and Greek studies, you'll find relevant coursework taught by experienced faculty in modern, well-equipped classrooms.
Located in the leafy suburb of Aghia Paraskevi on a beautiful wooded hillside campus, you'll live in a modern student residence complex just 10-20 minutes' walk from campus. Your residence features fully-equipped kitchens, shared bathrooms, quiet study areas, outdoor spaces for socializing, a fitness center, and on-site laundry facilities—with the option to upgrade to a single room for an additional fee. Internet access is included in all housing. The campus is well-connected to Athens' city center via public bus and modern metro, about 30 minutes away, allowing you to explore the city's rich archaeological sites, museums, and vibrant neighborhood culture on weekends.
Beyond the classroom, AIFS Abroad curates an enriching cultural experience designed to help you understand Greece authentically—not as a tourist, but as someone gaining insight into local life. Your program includes guided day trips to iconic sites like the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounio, the ancient sanctuary at Delphi, the castles of Nafplio, and nearby Greek islands (Hydra, Spetses, or Aegina), plus optional excursions for deeper exploration. A full calendar of weekly cultural activities and social events introduces you to classical Athens, the Acropolis, the National Archaeological Museum, the ancient Agora, and the charming Plaka neighborhood. You'll also have the opportunity to engage in meaningful community service through non-credit bearing service-learning experiences—volunteering at local schools, participating in refugee support, or joining the semester's Meaningful Engagement Trip (MET), a 2-3 day service journey elsewhere in Greece.
The program includes comprehensive support to make your transition smooth: 24/7 emergency support, comprehensive health insurance, pre-departure preparation, on-site advising from an experienced Program Director, and access to the Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment and alumni network. Optional round-trip flight packages from 25 U.S. cities are available, starting from $1,900 (Washington, D.C.) to $2,300 (Denver, Seattle, St. Louis, Des Moines), with airport transfers included. This is a rolling-admission program with quick acceptance (typically within 2 working days), and you'll receive a complimentary Eurail Global Pass (valued near $500) to explore Europe beyond Greece. Athens awaits—come experience a city where ancient history, modern culture, and genuine human connection converge.
