About Study Abroad in Barcelona, Spain January Term Program
Experience an intensive January Term study abroad program in Barcelona, Spain, one of Europe's most vibrant and culturally rich cities. Over 10 days (January 7-16, 2027), you'll earn 3 semester credits through Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, a top-5 ranked Spanish university, while immersing yourself in Catalan and Spanish culture. You have the choice of two English-taught courses: Spanish Art and Culture (spanning from prehistoric times to the present day) or International Business (exploring how modern businesses compete in a global environment). This program is designed for high school graduates and undergraduate students of all levels seeking a short but transformative study abroad experience.
Your learning extends far beyond the classroom. AIFS Abroad arranges a rich schedule of cultural activities including a guided tour of Barcelona's Gothic Quarter, visits to iconic sites like La Sagrada Família and Park Güell, a flamenco show, and a day excursion to the stunning Montserrat monastery set in distinctive mountain peaks. You'll explore the 12th-century carving of the Black Virgin and experience the natural beauty surrounding Barcelona. The program includes a welcome dinner to help you connect with fellow students and a farewell dinner to celebrate your time abroad.
Housing options allow you to choose between a Spanish homestay (the most immersive cultural experience with breakfast and dinner Monday through Friday) or a shared apartment in a centrally located Barcelona neighborhood. Both options include internet access and laundry facilities. All students begin with a hotel stay during the AIFS Abroad orientation program. Site staff, including Program Director Maya Edwards (a Spanish language and literature Ph.D. with over 15 years of experience), provide 24/7 support, comprehensive insurance, and guidance throughout your stay.
Barcelona itself is your classroom and playground. The city is renowned for its modern and art nouveau architecture, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, proximity to Mediterranean beaches, and the regional language of Catalan alongside Spanish—giving you exposure to two Romance languages. You'll have the opportunity to volunteer with local NGOs, deepening your connection to the community while providing meaningful service.
The inclusive program fee of $4,690 covers tuition, housing, most meals, excursions (including the Montserrat day trip), cultural and social activities, welcome and orientation services, onsite support, health and safety services, and carbon offsetting for your flights. Optional round-trip flights from 25 U.S. gateways are available at varying costs depending on your departure city (ranging from approximately $1,600 to $1,760). This is an ideal program for students seeking a high-impact, short-term abroad experience that combines academics, culture, and personal growth in one of Spain's most dynamic cities.
