About Study Abroad in Berlin, Germany - Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Fall Program
Experience a transformative semester in Berlin, Germany's vibrant capital city, studying at the prestigious Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin—the city's oldest university and home to 29 Nobel Prize winners, including Albert Einstein. This unique AIFS Abroad program treats Berlin itself as your learning laboratory. Every class incorporates embedded field trips throughout the city, allowing you to deeply understand the historical context and contemporary issues shaping Berlin, Germany, and Europe as a whole. All coursework is taught in English, making it accessible regardless of your German language background.
You'll take interdisciplinary social science and humanities courses across a range of academic interests including history, cultural studies, political science, philosophy, art history, urban planning, law, business, and social justice. The program emphasizes the Humboldtian principle that traveling to new places, questioning assumptions, and exchanging ideas between students and researchers are fundamental to learning. You can choose up to five electives for a total of 15 semester credits, with the option to substitute one elective with a German language course. Classes use interactive teaching methods that encourage you to express, discuss, and exchange different perspectives with students from around the globe.
Your living experience positions you as a genuine community member, not just a tourist. You'll reside in an apartment with two other AIFS students near the U-Bahn, with single rooms, shared kitchen and bathroom, bed linens, and laundry facilities provided. A meal card gives you subsidized access to university cafeterias, and you'll receive a Berlin transportation pass for unlimited metro, bus, and tram travel. Internet is included in all housing. Beyond the classroom, you'll participate in a rich cultural calendar featuring German cooking classes, opera visits, themed walking tours (Queer Berlin, Black History Berlin, refugee experiences), visits to the Reichstag and Museum Island, and group dinners exploring Berlin's diverse cuisine. You'll also receive a Museum Pass granting unlimited access to the State Museums Berlin's UNESCO World Heritage collections.
The program includes numerous excursions that deepen your understanding of German history and culture. Day trips take you to Potsdam (UNESCO World Heritage site and former summer residence of German Emperors), Erfurt (medieval charm and Christmas markets in fall), and Quedlinburg (historic town with a 1000-year-old cathedral). Longer overnight excursions include Dresden (rebuilt WWII city with world-class museums) and Polish destinations like Warsaw (with visits to Jewish history sites) and Szczecin (WWII bunker exploration). All excursions include transportation, accommodations, meals, and guided tours.
AIFS Abroad's support system ensures you thrive abroad. You'll receive 24/7 emergency support and comprehensive insurance, pre-departure orientation, on-site program director assistance, and access to the Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment for personal and professional development. An intercultural training component runs at the beginning and throughout your stay, helping you reflect on cultural diversity and earn a global skills certificate. You can also access AIFS's extensive alumni network for ongoing career and professional guidance.
This program is ideal for sophomores, juniors, and seniors with a minimum 2.5 GPA seeking an immersive European experience that combines rigorous academics with cultural immersion in one of the world's most historically significant and culturally dynamic cities.
