About Study Abroad in Prague, Czech Republic - Charles University January Term Program
Spend your January Term in Prague, one of Europe's most historically rich and culturally vibrant cities, where you'll earn 3 US semester credits while studying at Charles University, the oldest and most prestigious university in Central Europe. This two-week program offers you a choice between two intensive courses: Czech Language, designed to help you authentically engage with locals and understand Czech culture on a deeper level, or Alternative Culture, which explores the city's dynamic counterculture through street art, underground movements, punk, hip-hop, and political art collectives.
Based in the heart of Prague, you'll be surrounded by preserved medieval streets, Gothic spires, and Art Nouveau cafés that have inspired artists and writers for centuries—including Franz Kafka, who was born here. Your classroom experience goes far beyond traditional lectures; you'll study alongside other international students in an immersive environment where the city itself becomes part of your curriculum. Whether you're walking through the Old Town Square with its famous Astronomical Clock, exploring the expansive Prague Castle spanning 18 acres, or visiting the John Lennon graffiti wall, every corner of this "City of a Hundred Spires" offers cultural and historical learning opportunities.
Your program includes organized cultural and social activities designed to deepen your understanding of Prague and the Czech Republic. You'll enjoy guided walking tours, welcome dinners in traditional Czech restaurants, visits to museums and palaces, opera or ballet performances, and a day trip to the medieval World Heritage site of Český Krumlov, where you can tour the country's second-largest castle. All students receive a public transportation pass, making it easy to explore the city independently and get to class, which is located just a short walk from the AIFS Abroad office in the city center.
The program is designed to support your comfort and success abroad. You'll live in a student residence hall with other AIFS Abroad and international students, with shared double rooms (single rooms available upon request), a full-sized common kitchen on each floor, WiFi, laundry facilities, and 24-hour security. Monday-to-Friday European-style cold breakfast is included, and you'll have access to 24/7 emergency support and comprehensive insurance. The inclusive program fee of $5,290 covers tuition, housing, meals, excursions, cultural activities, on-site support, and health and safety services.
This January Term experience is open to sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students with a minimum 3.0 GPA. You'll receive access to professional development tools like the Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment and the AIFS Abroad alumni network, helping you build skills and connections for your future. Optional round-trip flights from 25 U.S. gateways are available, with pricing varying by departure city (ranging from approximately $1,820 to $2,240). Whether you're interested in language, culture, art history, or simply want to experience life in one of Europe's most enchanting cities during your winter break, this program offers the perfect blend of rigorous academics, cultural immersion, and personal growth.
