About Study Abroad in Salamanca, Spain - University of Salamanca January Term Program
Spend your January Term immersed in the elegant and historic city of Salamanca, Spain, where you'll study Spanish language at the University of Salamanca—recognized as Spain's leading institution for teaching Spanish as a second language. Founded in 1218, this world-renowned university is the third oldest in Europe and known as the "Oxford of the Spanish-speaking world" for its academic excellence and long tradition of Spanish language instruction.
You'll earn 3 semester credits while choosing from 4 different Spanish language levels, allowing you to study at the pace that matches your current proficiency. The program runs January 8–25, 2027, giving you an intensive three-week experience in one of Spain's most culturally rich destinations. Living with a carefully selected Spanish host family—typically sharing a double room with another AIFS Abroad student—you'll experience authentic Spanish life daily, from home-cooked meals (3 meals per day included) to conversations with native speakers in a real home environment. Many former AIFS Abroad students report that the homestay was the most rewarding part of their time abroad.
Beyond the classroom, you'll engage deeply with Spanish culture through organized activities including a welcome dinner, guided tours of Salamanca's university and cathedrals, a tapas tour (the city is known as one of Spain's best for "tapeo"—small bites and drinks), a Spanish cooking class, flamenco instruction, museum visits including the world-famous Prado in Madrid, and a farewell dinner. A 2-day guided excursion to Madrid is included, featuring the Prado Museum and Plaza Mayor with round-trip transportation, accommodations, and breakfast.
The program is open to high school graduates through non-students, with a minimum 2.0 GPA requirement. Your dedicated Program Director, available since 1987, provides academic advising, community introductions, and continuous support throughout your stay. AIFS Abroad handles all the logistics: your inclusive program fee covers tuition, housing, meals, cultural activities, excursions, on-site support, 24/7 emergency assistance, and comprehensive insurance. Optional round-trip flights from 25 U.S. cities are available, with prices ranging from $1,540 to $1,740 depending on your departure city. This is your chance to transform your Spanish abilities while living in a UNESCO World Heritage City and making memories that will last a lifetime.
