About Study Abroad in Salzburg, Austria - European Studies Semester Program
Immerse yourself in one of Europe's most captivating cities with AIFS Abroad's semester program in Salzburg, Austria. Located at the northern edge of the Alps and just miles from Bavaria, Salzburg offers the perfect blend of vibrant urban culture and access to stunning natural landscapes. You'll study at the AIFS Abroad Global Education Center, where courses are taught in English by faculty whose credentials are reviewed and approved by Fairfield University, ensuring academic rigor and transferability of your credits.
Your academic experience centers on the European Studies program, which allows you to take up to 15 semester credits across five courses in international relations, business and economics, arts and humanities, and German language. Classes meet Monday through Friday, with many courses featuring embedded excursions and field trips on Fridays that take you directly to local sites—from 900-year-old Werfen Castle to the Salzburg Festival venues—deepening your understanding of Austrian history and European culture. AIFS Abroad strongly encourages you to take a German language course to maximize your cultural immersion and ability to engage with daily life in Salzburg, though it's not required. A placement test ensures you're in the right language level.
Your living situation is tailored to your preferences. Choose between residence hall living in shared accommodations with access to kitchens and study spaces, or opt for an Austrian homestay to deepen your language skills and cultural understanding through daily interaction with a local family. Both options include internet access and are located throughout Salzburg, giving you genuine neighborhood experiences. The inclusive program fee covers tuition, housing, 24/7 emergency support, comprehensive health insurance, and a wealth of organized cultural activities and day trips—from guided tours of Vienna's imperial palaces to the picturesque Alpine village of Hallstatt.
Beyond the classroom, your program includes a vibrant calendar of cultural experiences. You might attend a Mozart dinner concert, participate in an Austrian cooking class or pastry seminar, catch a Red Bull soccer or hockey match, or explore the Austrian Christmas markets (fall term). Optional excursions take you to Munich's historic center, the saltmines of Berchtesgaden, and the heart of the Alps in Innsbruck. If you're an outdoor enthusiast, Salzburg is your gateway to world-class skiing, hiking, rock climbing, rafting, and sailing in the Austrian Alps and surrounding regions.
You'll have dedicated support from the AIFS Abroad Director (a native Austrian) and Academic Director, who help with cultural adjustment, housing questions, and academic guidance. The program also connects you to the renowned Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment for personal development and lifelong access to the AIFS alumni network. An optional travel package provides round-trip flights from 25 U.S. gateways and airport transfers, plus you'll receive a FREE Eurail Global Pass (valued at ~$500) to explore Europe during your free time. This is a rolling admissions program—expect acceptance confirmation within 2 working days of completing your application.
