About Study Abroad in Salzburg, Austria | Winter Quarter Program
Spend your Winter Quarter studying in Salzburg, Austria—one of Europe's most inspiring and culturally rich cities. This three-month program (January–March 2027) combines rigorous academics with unforgettable Alpine experiences, making it ideal for students who want to advance their education while enjoying world-class skiing and historic European culture.
You'll take one intensive course in January followed by three elective courses during February and March, all taught in English and worth 3 semester credits each, for a total of 12 semester credits. All courses are taught by qualified faculty and reviewed by Fairfield University, which awards your academic credit. Classes meet Monday through Friday with integrated field trips that enrich your learning beyond the classroom. You can choose courses in art history, German language, history, literature, music, political science, psychology, or sociology—allowing you to tailor your experience to your academic interests.
Salzburg itself is your classroom and playground. This UNESCO World Heritage city is home to Mozart, the Sound of Music, and some of Europe's best-preserved Baroque architecture. From your residence hall (shared accommodations with other AIFS students, complete with kitchen access and included internet), you'll have easy access to the Austrian Alps for skiing, hiking, and exploring picturesque mountain towns. The program includes day trips to Innsbruck in the heart of the Alps and a three-day excursion to Vienna, plus optional trips to Munich, Germany. You'll also participate in curated cultural activities—pastry seminars, Austrian cooking classes, visits to the famous Salt Mines, and guided city tours—that give you an authentic and insightful view of Austrian life beyond typical tourist attractions.
Support is built into every step of your journey. AIFS Abroad provides 24/7 emergency support, comprehensive insurance, and a dedicated on-site Program Director (Katharina Edtmayer, a native Austrian) and Academic Director (Raphaela Behounek, experienced ESL educator) to help you adjust, answer questions, and connect you with the local community. You'll also gain access to the Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment and the AIFS alumni network for personal and professional development.
The inclusive program fee of $14,990 covers tuition, housing, excursions (Vienna and Innsbruck), cultural activities, insurance, and all on-site support. Optional add-ons include round-trip flights from 25 U.S. cities (ranging from $1,580–$1,960) and optional excursions like Munich. You must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and be a first-year, sophomore, junior, or senior to apply. The application deadline is October 30, 2026, with rolling admissions—expect acceptance confirmation within 2 business days of completing your application.
