About Thailand & Japan Service & Adventure Program
Experience an extraordinary 26-day journey across Thailand and Japan that combines meaningful service work, adventure activities, and deep cultural immersion. This program is designed for high school students (grades 9-12) who want to make a real difference while exploring two of Asia's most captivating countries.
Your adventure begins in Northern Thailand, where you'll engage in hands-on conservation work at an ethical elephant sanctuary near Chiang Mai. You'll spend a full day caring for rescued Asian elephants alongside their mahouts (lifelong handlers), learning about their protection and forming meaningful connections with these magnificent creatures. Alongside this, you'll earn up to 20 hours of community service credit through the "Food For Thought" project at a local school, where you'll work with Thai students to build a sustainable Mushroom House, plant fruit trees, and create a lasting positive impact on the community. This isn't typical volunteering—you'll collaborate directly with local Thai students for genuine cross-cultural exchange.
Beyond service work, Thailand offers adventure and natural beauty. You'll trek to Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest peak, hike through lush jungle landscapes, participate in a jungle survival cooking lesson, and explore stunning waterfalls. The itinerary includes time on the picture-perfect islands of Koh Phi Phi and Krabi, where you can snorkel and scuba dive in crystal-clear waters, relax on pristine beaches, and visit the sacred Tiger Cave temple. You'll also immerse yourself in Thai culture through cooking classes where you'll learn authentic recipes and compete in market cooking challenges, visit the Night Markets of Chiang Mai and Bangkok, explore ornate Buddhist temples, experience traditional Thai massage, watch Muay Thai performances, and sample incredible street food from pad thai to fresh tropical fruits.
After Thailand's tropical warmth, you'll transition to Japan, where ancient tradition meets cutting-edge modernity. In Tokyo, you'll navigate the neon-lit Akihabara district, explore the bustling Shibuya Crossing (the world's busiest pedestrian crossing), shop in colorful Harajuku, visit the world-famous Tsukiji Fish Market, and take a sushi-making cooking class. You'll experience authentic Japanese culture through a traditional tea ceremony and visit stunning shrines throughout the city.
Your journey continues to Hiroshima, where you'll visit the Hiroshima Peace Museum for a deeply moving encounter with history and learn about the ongoing global peace movement. Finally, Kyoto—Japan's cultural gem—awaits with centuries-old temples, serene rock gardens, ornate palaces, and the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine with its iconic orange torii gates. You'll hike through enchanting bamboo forests, attempt to spot geishas in the historic city center, experience a traditional tea ceremony, and enjoy karaoke nights with new friends. Along the way, you'll also visit the stunning 700-year-old Himeji Castle.
Throughout the program, you'll stay in centrally located, safe, family-run hotels selected for their personal touch and proximity to main attractions. All meals, ground transportation, chaperones, guides, and program activities are included. Travel For Teens is committed to ethical tourism—notably, they do not support elephant riding and carefully vet all partner organizations to ensure ethical standards. This program is perfect for students seeking adventure, cultural connection, meaningful service work, and personal growth across two unforgettable Asian destinations.
