About Thailand Service and Adventure Program
Imagine spending your summer making a real difference in Northern Thailand while exploring one of Southeast Asia's most captivating regions. This 10-day program in Chiang Mai blends hands-on community service, cultural immersion, and thrilling outdoor adventures into a transformative experience designed specifically for high school students seeking meaningful global engagement.
You'll be at the heart of the "Food For Thought" project, where you'll work alongside Thai students to build sustainable agricultural infrastructure at an underfunded rural school. Your team will construct a Mushroom House—a structure that can produce up to 30 kilograms of mushrooms monthly—while planting fruit trees and preparing saplings for a greener future. This isn't busywork; you'll earn up to 20 hours of community service credit while directly addressing food insecurity in ethnic minority communities and helping schools achieve economic self-sufficiency. You'll stay at a locally-run student campus with dorm-style housing and work side-by-side with local Thai students, creating genuine cross-cultural connections that extend far beyond typical tourist interactions.
Beyond service, you'll immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Lanna culture and Northern Thai traditions. You'll explore the ancient city of Wiang Kum Kam, participate in hands-on cultural challenges learning traditional pottery, cooking, and dance from local experts, wander through the famous Night Market, and visit hilltribe villages in the countryside. A Market Cooking Challenge lets you source fresh ingredients at local markets and prepare authentic Thai dishes, while a chocolate-making workshop and "jungle survival" cooking lesson round out your culinary education. You'll also connect with local coffee farmers and learn about the region's unique agricultural practices.
Adventure is woven throughout. You'll hike to the summit of Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest peak, through breathtaking national park landscapes dotted with ethnic markets and cascading waterfalls—the trek is designed for all fitness levels and will be tailored to your group. You'll spend a full day at an ethically-vetted elephant sanctuary, learning about elephant conservation while working alongside mahouts (handlers) to care for and feed rescued elephants in their natural jungle setting. Travel for Teens takes a strong ethical stance: no elephant riding on any program. Rock climbing, archery, team-building challenges, and a bonfire under a starlit sky add to the adrenaline and camaraderie.
Your accommodations are thoughtfully selected—centrally located, family-run establishments rather than impersonal chain hotels, chosen specifically for their ability to facilitate group supervision and cultural authenticity. The tuition ($3,595 plus airfare) covers all ground transportation, meals at local authentic restaurants, chaperones and guides, program activities and admissions, taxes and tips. You'll eat like a local, with authentic Thai cuisine at every meal, and the program fully accommodates dietary restrictions including vegetarian, vegan, and allergen-free needs. Throughout the journey, you'll be supported by experienced leaders known for their relaxed yet highly organized approach, giving you the freedom to grow while ensuring your safety and wellbeing.
This program is designed for students finishing grades 9–12 from around the world who want to challenge themselves, expand their global perspective, and discover the meaningful impact they can create. You'll return home with new friendships, a deeper understanding of Thai culture and rural development challenges, practical skills in sustainable agriculture and survival, and memories that will reshape how you see your place in the world.
