About Thailand Service and the Islands Program
Experience an unforgettable 17-day summer adventure across Thailand, where you'll combine meaningful community service with cultural exploration and tropical island adventures. This program is designed for high school students (grades 9-12) who want to make a real difference while discovering one of Southeast Asia's most captivating destinations.
Your journey begins in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand's charming cultural heart, where you'll engage in hands-on service work at a local school through the "Food For Thought" project. Working alongside Thai students, you'll help build a sustainable mushroom house and plant fruit trees, earning up to 20 hours of community service credit while making tangible improvements to the community. You'll also participate in authentic cultural experiences including traditional cooking classes, Lanna crafts workshops, chocolate-making, and visits to night markets—all designed to deepen your understanding of Thai life and traditions.
The centerpiece of this program is your day at an ethically-operated elephant sanctuary in the jungle near Chiang Mai. You'll work directly with rescued Asian elephants, assisting their mahouts (lifelong handlers) in caring for, feeding, and bonding with these magnificent creatures. This is hands-on wildlife conservation work that provides insight into elephant protection efforts and the critical importance of ethical tourism. Travel For Teens proudly does not support elephant riding, ensuring your experience prioritizes animal welfare.
As you progress through the program, you'll experience the dramatic shift from jungle to beach. After hiking Thailand's highest peak, Doi Inthanon, in a full-day trek through stunning national park terrain, you'll trade the mountains for tropical islands. Days on Koh Phi Phi and Krabi offer snorkeling, scuba diving (optional), pristine beaches, and visits to sacred Buddhist sites like Tiger Cave Temple. You'll explore the dramatic limestone cliffs of Railay Beach by traditional longtail boat and relax in natural hot springs.
The program culminates in Bangkok, Southeast Asia's energetic capital, where you'll visit the opulent Royal Palace, the iconic Wat Arun temple, and the sprawling Bang-Pa-In summer palace. You'll dive into the sensory experience of Khao San Road's street food scene and, if interested, catch a traditional Muay Thai performance. Throughout the journey, you'll stay in carefully selected, locally-run accommodations—never large chain hotels—ranging from a non-profit community center near Chiang Mai to beachfront resorts on the islands and a bamboo hut on the river.
This program balances active adventure with cultural immersion and service work, offering daily variety and the chance to form lasting friendships with fellow travelers and locals alike. Whether you're scaling waterfalls, learning to cook authentic pad thai, working with endangered wildlife, or discovering hidden beaches, every moment is designed to challenge you, broaden your perspective, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
